The Zohar · Vayikra

Zohar, Vayikra 31

Section 31 of 67 in Vayikra — 11 segments

Segment 1

R. Jose said: ‘It is written, “For this is as the waters of Noah unto me” (Isa. 54, 9). Why have we here the expression “waters of Noah” and not “waters of the flood”?

Segment 2

But thus it has been taught: when the righteous increase in the world, the Holy One, blessed be He, rejoices and is praised in them. For we have learnt that when a righteous man dwells in the world and is found in it, he casts, as it were, peace over the world, and the whole world is blessed for his sake, and he casts peace among the celestial household. How do we know it? As it is written, “Or let him take hold of My strength, that he may make peace with Me; peace let him make with Me” (Isa. 27, 5). Why two mentions of peace here? But “that he may make peace with Me”: that male and female dwell together. “Peace let him make with Me”: that the patriarchs are blessed.

Segment 3

What difference is there between them? R. Jose said: when the patriarchs are blessed, “peace let him make with Me”, for peace goes first in all; and therefore “peace” stands first. “That he may make peace with Me”: why does “peace” not stand first here? But it is so that the serpent that dwells in the female may first pass away, and the male may come to dwell in his place; and therefore “make” stands first, and afterwards “peace”. (Vayikra, folio 81b, and this discourse begins there.)
