Zohar, Vayikra 11

Section 11 of 67 in Vayikra — 5 segments

Segment 1

As they went along they saw R. Abba approaching. They said: ‘Here comes a master of wisdom; let us greet the Shekinah.’ When, however, they came up, he himself slipped off the saddle and came down to the ground by them.

Segment 2

He then began to discourse on the verse: “And there was the voice of a trumpet (shofar) exceedingly loud” (Ex. 19, 16). ‘The ancient scribes’, he said, ‘differed as to the correct intonation of this verse. Some punctuated it so as to read, “And there was a voice, the trumpet exceeding strong”, making the voice and the trumpet two things, the trumpet being the signal for slaves to go forth to everlasting freedom.

Segment 3

And there are those who teach and deduce that all is one, because it is written “the voice of the shofar”: a voice that is called shofar. And how do we know that it is called a voice? From what is written, “a great voice, and it went on no more” (Deut. 5, 19); and this great voice is called shofar. And therefore it is written, “the voice of the shofar goes.” Where does it go? If you say to Mount Sinai, or to Israel, it should have said “comes down”. But the Torah issues from here, and from this place, which is the sum of all the other voices, it was given. And when the words are examined, all is one.
