Midrash Hane'elam. AND THE LORD VISITED SARAH AS HE HAD SAID. R. Johanan discoursed on the verse: “Your head upon you is like Carmel, and the hair of your head like purple; the king is held captive in the tresses” (S. S. 7, 6). The Holy One, blessed be He, made rulers above and rulers below. When the Holy One, blessed be He, gives greatness to the chieftains above, the kings below take greatness. He gave greatness to the chieftain of Babylon, and Nebuchadnezzar the wicked took greatness, of whom it is written: “You are the head of gold” (Dan. 2, 38); and all the world was in subjection under his hand, and his son’s, and his son’s son’s. This is the meaning of “Your head upon you is like Carmel” — this is Nebuchadnezzar; and so it is written: “under it the beasts of the field had shadow” (Dan. 4, 9). “And the hair of your head like purple” — this is Belshazzar, who said: “shall be clothed with purple” (Dan. 5, 7). “The king is held captive in the tresses” — this is Evil-merodach, who was held captive until his father Nebuchadnezzar died, and he reigned in his stead.
Segment 2
R. Judah said: For what purpose does this exposition come in the Song of Songs? But R. Judah said: Seven things were created before the world was created, and these are they, etc.: the Throne of Glory, as it is said, “Your throne is established of old; You are from everlasting” (Ps. 93, 2), and it is written, “A throne of glory, on high from the beginning” (Jer. 17, 12) — for it was the head that preceded all. And the Holy One, blessed be He, took the pure soul from the Throne of Glory to give light to the body. This is the meaning of “Your head upon you is like Carmel” — this is the Throne of Glory, which is head over all. “And the hair of your head like purple” — this is the soul that is taken from it. “The king is held captive in the tresses” — this is the body, which is held captive in the grave and wastes away in the dust, and nothing remains of it but a spoonful of decay; and from it the whole body will be built. And when the Holy One, blessed be He, visits the body, He says to the earth that it should cast it out, as it is written: “and the earth shall cast out the shades” (Is. 26, 19).
Segment 3
R. Johanan said: The dead who are in the Land live first. This is the meaning of what is written, “Your dead shall live” (Is. 26, 19). “My dead bodies shall arise” — these are those outside the Land. “Awake and sing, you that dwell in the dust” — these are the dead in the wilderness. For R. Johanan said: Why did Moses die outside the Land? To show all who come into the world that just as the Holy One, blessed be He, will in the time to come revive Moses, so will He revive his generation, who received the Torah. And of them it is said: “I remember for you the affection of your youth, the love of your espousals; how you went after Me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown” (Jer. 2, 2).
