Segment 1

It has been taught: R. Eleazar said: ‘What is the meaning of the verse, “And Moses spoke”, etc., “the words of this song until they were finished”? Here there is something to consider: what is “the words of”? It should have said “this song”. And what is “until they were finished”? But so it has been taught in the esoteric teaching of our Mishnah: all those words that Moses uttered were engraved in the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, and all those words came, and ascended and descended, and were engraved there. And each single word came before Moses to be engraved by his hand, and stood before him. And this is what is written, “until they were finished”.’

Segment 2

R. Abba said: ‘“The words of this song” (shirah): it should have said “this song”. What is hinted at here? It is the shirah that the Holy One, blessed be He, uttered, as it says, (S. S. 1, 1) “The song (shir) of songs, which is Solomon’s”: the King to whom peace belongs, all of it His; and we have already explained these words. (for it has been taught: it is written) (Ps. 92, 1) “A psalm, a song for the sabbath day”: for the sabbath day literally. A shir that the Holy One, blessed be He, uttered.’ (“The song of songs, which is Solomon’s”: a shir that the Holy One, blessed be He, uttered.) (And here, “the words of this song”: a shirah that the Holy One, blessed be He, uttered.)

Segment 3

But here there is something to consider: there shir, and here shirah. The one is male and the other female. And as we have learnt, all the prophets, set beside Moses, were as an ape in the eyes of men, and they said shir, while Moses said shirah. (And how do we know that this one is female? Because it is written, “and this song shall testify”, etc.) Moses should have said shir, and they shirah. But this is the inner meaning of the matter: Moses was speaking not for himself but for Israel.
