Segment 1א׳

פָּתַח רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן וְאָמַר, (ישעיהו י׳:ל׳) צַהֲלִי קוֹלֵךְ בַּת גַּלִּים וְגו'. צַהֲלִי קוֹלֵךְ, הַאי קְרָא לִכְנְסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל אִתְּמָר, בְּגִין דְּאִיהִי מְשַׁבַּחַת לֵיהּ לְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, בְּקָלָא מְשַׁבְּחָא, וְעַל דַּא צַהֲלִי קוֹלֵךְ. מֵהָכָא אוֹלִיפְנָא, כָּל מַאן דְּבָעֵי לְשַׁבְּחָא לְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא בְּקָלָא, בָּעְיָא לֵיהּ קָלָא נְעִימוּתָא, דְּיֶעֱרַב לְאָחֳרָנִין דְּשָׁמְעִין לֵיהּ, וְאִי לָאו, לָא יָקוּם לַאֲרָמָא קָלָא.

R. Simeon then discoursed on the verse: Raise thy voice, O daughter of Gallim, etc. (Is. 10, 30). ‘This verse’, he said, ‘was addressed to the Community of Israel, which lauds God with the voice of praise. We learn from here that anyone who desires to praise God with singing should have an agreeable voice in order that those who listen may derive pleasure from hearing him; if not, he should not come forward to sing.

Segment 2ב׳

תָּא חֲזֵי, לֵיוָאֵי דְּאַתְיָין מִסִּטְרָא דָא, דִּכְתִיב, (במדבר ח׳:כ״ה) וּמִבֶּן חֲמִשִּׁים שָׁנָה יָשׁוּב מִצְּבָא הָעֲבוֹדָה וְגו'. מַאי טַעְמָא. בְּגִין דְּקָלֵיהּ (דרגיה, ואי) נָמִיךְ, וְלָא יֶעֱרַב לְאוּדְנִין, כִּשְׁאָר חַבְרוֹי, כְּדֵין מְעַבְרִין לֵיהּ מֵהַאי צְבָא הָעֲבוֹדָה (מחיילין) דִלְעֵילָא, דְּקָיְימִין לְנַגָּנָא לְגַבֵּי הַאי עֲבוֹדָה, וּלְיַקְּרָא שְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא כְּדְקָא חָזֵי.

The Levites were commanded to retire from service at the age of fifty (Num. 8, 25), because at that age a man’s voice begins to fail and is no longer so agreeable.

Segment 3ג׳

חֵילִין לְעֵילָא, חֵילִין וּמַשִּׁרְיָין לְגַבֵּי תַּתָּאֵי, לְשַׁבְּחָא שְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא, וּלְזַמְּרָא לוֹן. וּבְגִינִי כָּךְ יָשׁוּב מִצְּבָא הָעֲבוֹדָה. וּבְגִין דִּכְנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל קָא מְשַׁבְּחָא לֵיהּ לְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, אָמַר קְרָא, צַהֲלִי קוֹלֵךְ בַּת גַּלִּים, בַּת אֲבָהָן.

Hosts above; hosts and camps toward those below, to praise the Holy Name and to sing to them. And therefore, “he shall return from the host of the service”. And because the Community of Israel praises the Holy One, blessed be He, the verse says, “Raise your voice, O daughter of Gallim” — daughter of the patriarchs.
