Segment 1א׳

וַיִּקְרָא לִבְנוֹ לְיוֹסֵף וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ אִם נָא מָצָאתִי חֵן בְּעֵינֶיךָ, חָקַר יַת בְּנוֹהִי כֻּלְּהוֹן, וְאָמַר לְהוֹן, עַקְתָן סַגִּיאִין, בִּישִׁין רַבְרְבִין, חָמִית לְמֵיעַל לִבְרֵיכוֹן אַשְׁכְּחָן רַחֲמֵי עִלָּאֵי.

AND HE CALLED HIS SON JOSEPH, AND SAID TO HIM: IF NOW I HAVE FOUND FAVOUR IN YOUR SIGHT. He examined all his sons and said to them: Many afflictions, great evils, I have seen coming upon your children — supernal mercies are found.

Segment 2ב׳

וְאִי אַתּוּן בָּעָאן לְמֵיפַּק מִכָּל עָקְתָא, קַיְימוּ לִי, וְהֲבוּ בֵּינָנָא רִבּוֹן עָלְמָא וְתַעַבְדוּן קְשׁוֹט וְדִינָא, וְתֶהוֵי כַּאֲבָהַתְכוֹן, וּפַקִּידֵי בְּכָל דָּר וְדָר דְּיֵיתֵי בַּתְרֵיכוֹן, וְאִי אַתּוּן בָּעָאן לְמֶעְבַּד הָכִי, תִּפְקוּן מִכָּל עַקְתָא דְּיֵיתֵי עֲלֵיכוֹן.

And if you wish to come out of all affliction, pledge it to me, and set the Master of the Universe between us, and practise truth and justice, and be like your fathers, and appointed in every generation that comes after you. And if you wish to do so, you will come out of every affliction that comes upon you.

Segment 3ג׳

רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אָמַר, (עמוס ה׳:ט״ו) וְהַצִּיגוּ בַשַּׁעַר מִשְׁפָּט אוּלַי יֶחנַן ה' אֱלֹהֵי צְבָאוֹת שְׁאֵרִית יוֹסֵף. (דאתקריאו בנוהי ישראל כלהון יוסף)

R. Simeon said: “And establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph” (Amos 5, 15).

הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, (בראשית כ״ד:ב׳) שִׂים נָא יָדְךָ תַּחַת יְרֵכִי, מַהוּ יָדְךָ. פָּתַח וְאָמַר, (תהילים מ״ה:ד׳) חֲגוֹר חַרְבְּךָ עַל יָרֵךְ גִּבּוֹר הוֹדְךָ וַהֲדָרֶךָ, סַיְיפָא דְקָאי בָּהּ חֶסֶד וְאֱמֶת, תְּרֵין סְפִירָן סְפִירָן, וְלָא שָׁבְקִין דָּא לְדָא. וְעַל דָּא אָמַר, (תהילים פ״ט:ט״ו) חֶסֶד וֶאֱמֶת יְקַדְמוּ פָנֶיךָ, (איכה ד׳:ט״ז) פְּנֵי ה' חִלְּקָם. וְאִי הֲווּ טָבָאן בְּנוֹהִי, וְעֲבִידוּ מַה דְּקָיְימוּ, לָא מִית חַד מִבְּנַיְיהוּ בְּמִצְרָאֵי, דְּכָל טַב וְטַב דְּגָזִיר שְׁמָא דֵּאלָהָא עַל אֵינָשָׁא, לָא הֲוֵי אֶלָּא עַל דִּיהוֹן טָבִין. וְאִי לָא, לָא. כְּמָה דְּאָמַר דָוִד, (מלכים א ב׳:ד׳) לְמַעַן יָקִים ה' אֶת דְּבָרוֹ אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר עָלַי לֵאמֹר אִם יִשְׁמְרוּ בָנֶיךָ אֶת דַּרְכָּם לָלֶכֶת לְפָנַי בֶּאֱמֶת. וְאִי לָא, לָא (מייתי ברכאן דאמר עליהון).

This is what is written: “Put your hand under my thigh” (Gen. 24, 2). What is “your hand”? He discoursed on the verse: “Gird your sword upon your thigh, O mighty one, your glory and your majesty” (Ps. 45, 4) — the sword in which chesed (mercy) and truth stand, two sefirot (emanations), and they do not leave one another. And therefore he said: “Mercy and truth go before You” (Ibid. 89, 15); “The face of the Lord has divided them” (Lam. 4, 16). And if his sons had been good, and had done what they undertook, not one of their sons would have died in Egypt; for every good thing that the name of God decrees upon a man is only on condition that they be good — and if not, not. As David said: “that the Lord may establish His word which He spoke concerning me, saying: If your children take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth” (I Kings 2, 4). And if not, not.
