Section 28 of 86 in Vayechi — 13 segments
Segment 1
R. Simeon discoursed on the verse: “I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys” (S. S. 2, 1). How beloved is the Community of Israel before the Holy One, blessed be He! For the Holy One, blessed be He, praises her, and she praises Him continually; and how many praises and songs she has ready for the Holy One, blessed be He, continually. Happy is the portion of Israel, who hold fast to Him by the lot of the holy portion, as it is written: “For the portion of the Lord is His people, etc.” (Deut. 32, 9).
Segment 2
“I am a rose of Sharon” — this is the Community of Israel, who stands in the beauty of her comeliness in the Garden of Eden. “Of Sharon” — for she sings and praises the supernal King.
Segment 3
Another explanation of “I am a rose of Sharon”: that she desires to be watered from the watering of the deep stream, the source of the rivers, as it says: “And the parched land shall become a pool” (Is. 35, 7). “A lily of the valleys” — for she stands in the deepest of all. What are these “valleys”? As it says: “Out of the depths have I called You, O Lord” (Ps. 130, 1). “A rose of Sharon”: a rose from that place from which the watering of the rivers goes out and never ceases. “A lily of the valleys”: a lily from that place which is called the deepest of all, hidden on every side.
