Segment 1א׳

וַאֲנִי בְּבֹאִי מִפַּדַּן מֵתָה עָלַי רָחֵל בַּדֶּרֶךְ וְגו', רִבִּי אַבָּא פָּתַח, (ירמיהו ל״א:ט״ו) כֹּה אָמַר ה' קוֹל בְּרָמָה נִשְׁמָע וְגו', מַה כְּתִיב בַּתְרֵיהּ, כֹּה אָמַר ה' מִנְּעִי קוֹלֵךְ מִבֶּכִי וְעֵינַיִךְ מִדִּמְעָה כִּי יֵשׁ שָׂכָר לִפְעוּלָתֵךְ וְגו' וְשָׁבוּ בָנִים לִגְבוּלָם, לא אָמַר וְיָשׁוּבוּ, אֶלָּא וְשָׁבוּ, כְּבָר שָׁבוּ.

AND AS FOR ME, WHEN I CAME FROM PADDAN, RACHEL DIED BY ME IN THE WAY, ETC. R. Abba discoursed on the verse: Thus says the Lord: A voice is heard in Ramah, etc. (Jer. 31, 15). What is written after it? “Thus says the Lord: Refrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for your work shall be rewarded, etc., and the children shall return to their own border” (Ibid. 16). It does not say “and they shall return” (ve-yashubu) but “and they have returned” (ve-shabu): they have already returned.

Segment 2ב׳

תָּא חֲזֵי, אָמַר רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר, בְּשַׁעְתָּא דִיהֵא דִינָא עַל טוּרָא, תִּתְעַטַּר מַטְרוֹנִיתָא עַל טוּרָא, וְהִיא סָבְרַת דִּבְנֵיהוֹן אָבְדִין בְּדִינָא, וְרָזָא (ישעיהו נ״ד:א׳) רָנִי עֲקָרָה לֹא יָלָדָה פִּצְחִי רִנָּה וְצַהֲלִי וְגו'. תָּנָא, סַגְיָין יְהוֹן בְּנִי כֻּרְסְיָיא מִן דִּידָהּ. הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, כִּי רַבִּים בְּנֵי שׁוֹמֵמָה מִבְּנִי בְעוּלָה, תִיתוּב מַטְרוֹנִיתָא לְבַעֲלָהּ, (זכריה י״ד:ט׳) בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יִהְיֶה ה' אֶחָד וּשְׁמוֹ אֶחָד.

Observe. R. Eleazar said: at the time when judgement shall be upon the mountain, the Matron will be crowned upon the mountain, and she thinks that their children perish in the judgement; and the mystery is: “Sing, O barren one, you that did not bear; break forth into singing and cry aloud, etc.” (Is. 54, 1). It has been taught: the children of the throne shall be more numerous than her own. So it is written: “for the children of the desolate shall be more than the children of the married wife.” The Matron will return to her husband: “On that day the Lord shall be One and His name one” (Zech. 14, 9).

Segment 3ג׳

מִן קַדְמַת דְּנָא, תֵּימָא מַטְרוֹנִיתָא לְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, בְּנַיָיא דִילִי אָן. יֵימָא לָהּ, בְּדִינָא. הִיא תִּסְבַּר דְּאָבְדִין בְּדִינָא, וּבָכָה עַל דִּינָא לִבְנַיָא דִידָהּ, כִּי אֲרֵי סַגִּי אִית לָךְ לְמֵיסַב מִנִּי בְּדִלְהוֹן, דְּהֲוַת עִמְּהוֹן, וְהָא תָּבוּ מֵאַרְעָא דְּשַׂנְאָה.

Before this, the Matron will say to the Holy One, blessed be He: where are my children? He will say to her: in judgement. She will think that they are lost in the judgement, and she weeps over the judgement upon her children — for indeed you have much to receive from Me on their account, since you were with them; and behold, they have returned from the land of hatred.

Segment 4ד׳

וְכִי לָא הֲוָה יָדַע יוֹסֵף דְּמֵתָה אִמֵּיהּ, תַּמָן הֲוָה עִמָּהּ כַּד מֵתָה. אֶלָּא יֹאמַר יִשְׂרָאֵל עִלָּאָה, כַּד נֵיתֵי מִפְרָקְנֵיהוֹן דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, תִּתְעַר מַטְרוֹנִיתָא, וְתִתְעַר כְּנֶסֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְתִגַּח קְרָבָא עִם עַמָּמִין, וִימוּתוּן מִנְהוֹן, וְיִתְקָרְבוּן בִּזְעֵיר לְמֵיתֵי אַרְעָא. יֵימַר לָהּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, כַּד הִיא בָּכָה. לָא תִדְחֲלִי, אַגְרָא לְהוֹן בְּנַיָיא דְּמִיתָן עַל שְׁמִי, אָחֳרָנִין הָא תָּבוּ, אִינוּן יְתוּבוּן לְחַיֵּי מֵיתַיָיא.

And did Joseph not know that his mother had died? He was there with her when she died. Rather, the supernal Israel says: when the redemption of Israel comes, the Matron will be roused, and the Community of Israel will be roused, and she will wage war with the nations, and some of them will die, and they will draw near, little by little, to come to the land. The Holy One, blessed be He, will say to her, when she weeps: do not fear; there is a reward for them, the children who died for My name. The others have already returned; these shall return to the life of the dead.

Segment 5ה׳

מֵתָה עָלַי רָחֵל, מֵתָה עַל יִיחוּד שְׁמָא דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, וְעַל דָּא אִתְּמָר בְּעוֹד כִּבְרַת אֶרֶץ לָבֹא, דְּמִיתוּ עַל יִיחוּד שְׁמָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, לְבַר לְאַרְעָא, בְּאַרְעָא דָּא, לָא יָמוּת חַד מִנְּהוֹן.

RACHEL DIED BY ME: she died for the unification of the name of the Holy One, blessed be He. And therefore it is said, WHEN THERE WAS STILL SOME WAY TO COME — that those who died for the unification of the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, died outside the land; but in this land not one of them shall die.
