Segment 1
It is written: “Blessed be the name of the Lord” (Job 1). What is “blessed”, mevorakh? (But all of them know it.) Yet one mystery one of our companions knew: in the wilderness they showed it to him in a dream, and R. Isaac Kaftora is his name. What is mevorakh? Its beginning is hard and its end is soft. Mem-beth, forty-two, is hard, and it is judgement assuredly. And afterward, after this manner: the day of New Year is forty-two, for by forty-two letters the world was created, and therefore it was created in judgement; afterward, rakh, soft. And therefore we have learnt: all beginnings are hard, and their ends are soft. On the day of New Year, forty-two, hard, in judgement; on the day of the solemn assembly, soft, in joy.
Segment 2
Observe: what is the difference between the supernal judgement and this judgement? The supernal judgement — its beginning and its end are hard, and there is none that can stand before it; and all the while it goes on it grows stronger, and after it has settled it does not depart until it has consumed and destroyed all, so that nothing at all is left. But the other judgement, that of below — its beginning is hard, and all the while it goes on it grows weaker, until the face shines; after the manner of the female, whose strength is weak.
Segment 3
When was the judgement of above roused to rest upon the world? In the day of the Flood. And therefore nothing was left in the world save that ark of Noah, which is after the supernal pattern and which bore that force. And had the Holy One, blessed be He, not made ready and been found in mercy over the world, the whole world would have been lost, as it is written: “The Lord sat enthroned at the Flood” (Ps. 29, 10). And therefore the judgement of above does not rest upon the world, since the world could not bear it, even for a single moment.
