Section 71 of 98 in Terumah — 2 segments
Segment 1
The shortened form of “ten” (‘eser) is used here in order to show that the Shekinah herself is not included in the ten, since she broods above the congregation. So it is in all places where a shortened form is used for “ten”, as, for instance, “It stood upon twelve (shne ‘asar) oxen” (I Kings 12, 25), where the Shekinah was not included in the number, for it says: “and the sea (i.e. the Shekinah) was set above them” (Ibid.).
Segment 2
To the other side they give the fuller reckoning, while in the number it stands in deficiency — as in ‘ashte, and this has been explained. And in every place where letters are added in this manner, it is for diminution: as in “Has Aminon your brother been with you?” (2 Sam. 13, 20), where Amnon would have been enough. But on the side of holiness a letter is lacking, and that is the addition.
