Section 14 of 35 in Tazria — 11 segments
Segment 1
R. Abba then discoursed on the verse: “And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh” (Gen. 32, 26)….
Segment 2
Rather, it was from him that he exacted it. And it has been stated: it is written, “And he himself lodged that night in the camp” (Gen. 32, 21), and it is written, “And he took them and sent them over the stream.” What was in Jacob’s mind, to take them over the stream by night? He saw the accuser going about among his camps, and Jacob said: ‘I will cross to the other side of the river; then perhaps there will be no confusion.’
Segment 3
What did he see? He saw a flame of blazing fire going and flying about among his camps. Jacob said: ‘It is better to move from here, and let the river divide between them, and there will be no confusion.’ Straightway, “And he took them and sent them over the stream. And Jacob was left alone.” From here we learn: one who is found alone in a house at night, or by day in a house that stands apart — all the more so at night. What is “stands apart”? Set apart from the other houses. Or one who walks alone at night: he is liable to come to harm.
