Segment 1
R. Hiya said: ‘It is written, “Whoso robbeth his father and his mother”, etc. (Prov. 28, 24). The “father” here’, he said, ‘is the Holy One, blessed be He, and the “mother” is the Community of Israel;
Segment 2
and we have learnt, ‘Whoever enjoys anything of this world without a blessing is like one who robs the Holy One and the Community of Israel. So he who has enjoyment of his wife without a blessing is like one who robs the Holy One and the Community of Israel, because their union is consummated by seven blessings. Further, he is “the companion of the destroyer” (Ibid.), because he impairs the celestial form and arrangement: all the more so, then, one who covets the wife of another to cleave to her.’
Segment 3
“He is the companion of a destroyer” (Prov. 28, 24) — this is Jeroboam, as has been explained. “And says: It is no transgression”: he says, ‘She is unmarried; why should it be forbidden?’ Because of this he is one who “robs his father and his mother.” And not only that, but “he is the companion of a destroyer.” Who is the destroyer? One who impairs the celestial form and arrangement. All the more so one who covets the wife of another to cleave to her, for he impairs still more; and therefore he is himself impaired for ever. “A destroyer”: he impairs above, and impairs below, and impairs his own soul, since it is written “destroyer,” and it is written: “He who does it destroys his own soul” (Prov. 6, 32).
