Section 5 of 5 in Shoftim — 4 segments
Segment 1
A precept after this one: to accept the Great Court over them — binah (understanding), which from the side of greatness is called Elohim, the Great Court, great in its judgements and great in its merits — after the manner of what is said, “you shall surely set a king over you,” in the precept: “set” above, “you shall set” below. So too he must accept the great court over himself, even though he has accepted the small court over himself. The small court, a court of three, is from the side of the lower Shekinah. The great court is of these, the Great Sanhedrin.
Segment 2
The Holy Lamp said: ‘The Great Sanhedrin were seventy, and you are greater than all of them: “And it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves” (Ex. 18, 22). These. (They are the Great Sanhedrin, the Small Sanhedrin.) The Great Sanhedrin is from the side of the supernal Shekinah; the Small Sanhedrin is from the side of the lower Shekinah.’
Segment 3
Moses is the friend of the King; Aaron is the friend of the Matrona. And with them the Sanhedrin are seventy-two, as the reckoning of chesed (mercy); and from here comes the Great Sanhedrin. The Small Sanhedrin is from the left side: “the lesser light to rule the night” (Gen. 1, 16).
