Segment 1
He draws a drawing from his own side, and is hidden and covered under a place that is called “the guard-chamber” (I Kings 14, 28), until midnight. From after midnight the flame of the pillar of Isaac goes out and strikes this cock that is called gever (a man), after the pattern of another, supernal gever above him. As soon as this gever strikes it, it crows and gives six voices, and all of them in understanding.
Segment 2
When it crows, all the cocks of this world crow, and another flame goes out from it and reaches them under their wings, and they crow. And what does it cry? At the first hour it cries and says, “The voice of the Lord is powerful, the voice of the Lord is full of majesty” (Ps. 29, 4). At the second hour it cries and says, “The voice of the Lord calls to the city” (Mic. 6, 9), “The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars” (Ps. 29, 4). At the third hour it cries and says, “The voice of the Lord hews out flames of fire.” At the fourth hour it cries and says, “The voice of the Lord makes the wilderness to tremble,” etc. (Ps. 29, 8). At the fifth hour it cries and says, “The voice of the Lord is upon the waters,” etc. At the sixth hour it cries and says, “The voice of the Lord makes the hinds to calve,” etc. Afterwards it cries and says, “A voice says: ‘Cry’; and he said: ‘What shall I cry?’” etc. (Isa. 40, 6). And this is the cock that crows and is not silent; and afterwards it crows again as at first.
Segment 3
And what does it cry? All the deeds of the people of the world; for he is the master of the case (a variant reads: of wisdom), and the scribe's inkhorn is at his loins. And all the deeds of the people of the world are written every day. And at night, after he has cried all these cries, he reads out all that he wrote by day.
