Segment 1
(Wanting.) And therefore the Messiah rejoiced, and the Head of the Academy rejoiced, at being given these tidings. And the Head of the Academy said that he had questioned the Messiah closely, saying: From where did Daniel have it, that he said, “Peres: your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians” (Dan. 5, 28)? From those letters of upharsin he understood it. And here, what is it? He said to him: So it is, certainly. “Peres: your kingdom is divided” — the wicked kingdom, by the hand of another messiah; and afterwards the king of Persia shall rule, and shall take many kingdoms, and he shall rule over the Holy Land twelve months, and shall rule and slay many, and that messiah too; and afterwards he shall fall, and the supernal holy ones shall receive the kingdom. And therefore upharsin: the king of Persia is heard here.
Segment 2
O holy pious one, how much joy upon joy there is at that fountain! At that fountain there grow all the kinds of trees that the Holy One, blessed be He, planted in the Garden of Eden, and they all stand for healing — leaves and fruits and branches — and to gladden the heart continually. And there is never among them hunger, or care, or sighing. Happy is the people for whom all this waits, and for whom all this is laid up.
Segment 3
R. Simeon said: In the floor of this Temple there are of those wondrous Mems. He said to him: Ah, Rabbi, ah, Rabbi, happy is your portion, that all this is yours. In that. Upon that fountain there is embroidery, but there is none who can look upon it. At times its shining is light, at times darkness, at times the colour of purple, sparkling, so that the eyes cannot look above. (A variant reads: that.) That which you asked, holy pious one, about that floor of the Temple, the Head of the Academy did not expound it, for it is laid up within the Jordan. And I have told you what I have told you; but let us ask this thing, and you will know what you will know.
