Segment 1א׳

(שמות ג׳:א׳) וּמֹשֶׁה הָיָה רוֹעֶה אֶת צֹאן יִתְרוֹ חוֹתְנוֹ כֹּהֵן מִדְיָן. רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן פָּתַח, (שיר השירים ב׳:ט״ז) דּוֹדִי לִי וַאֲנִי לוֹ הָרוֹעֶה בַּשּׁוֹשַׁנִּים. אָמַר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, אוֹי לָהֶם לַבְּרִיּוֹת, שֶׁאֵינָם מַשְׁגִּיחִים וְאֵינָם יוֹדְעִים, בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁעָלָה בְּמַחֲשָׁבָה לִפְנִי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בְּרִיךְ הוּא, לִבְרוֹא עוֹלָמוֹ, כָּל הָעוֹלָמוֹת עָלוּ בְּמַחֲשָׁבָה אַחַת, וּבְמַחֲשָׁבָה זוּ נִבְרָאוּ כּוּלָּם, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, (תהילים ק״ד:כ״ד) כֻּלָּם בְּחָכְמָה עָשִׂיתָ. וּבְמַחֲשָׁבָה זוּ, שֶׁהִיא הַחָכְמָה, נִבְרָא הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה, וְהָעוֹלָם שֶׁל מַעְלָה.

NOW MOSES KEPT THE FLOCK OF JETHRO HIS FATHERIN-LAW, THE PRIEST OF MIDIAN. R. Simeon discoursed here on the text: “My beloved is mine and I am his; he among the lilies tendeth his flock.” He said: ‘Alas for mankind, they neither heed nor know! When God designed to create the universe, His thought compassed all worlds at once, and by means of this thought were they all created, as it says, “In wisdom hast thou made them all” (Ps. 104, 24). By this thought-which is His Wisdom-were this world and the world above created.

Segment 2ב׳

נָטָה יְמִינוֹ, וּבָרָא הָעוֹלָם שֶׁל מַעְלָה. נָטָה שְׂמֹאלוֹ, וּבָרָא הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, (ישעיהו מ״ח:י״ג) אַף יָדִי יָסְדָה אֶרֶץ וִימִינִי טִפְּחָה שָׁמָיִם. קוֹרֵא אֲנִי אֲלֵיהֶם יַעַמְדוּ יַחְדָּו. וְכֻלָּם בְּרֶגַע אַחַת (ובשעה אחת) נִבְרָאוּ, וְעָשָׂה הָעוֹלָם הַזֶּה, כְּנֶגֶד הָעוֹלָם שֶׁל מַעְלָה. וְכָל מַה שֶּׁיֵּשׁ לְמַעְלָה, כְּדוּגְמָתוֹ לְמַטָּה. וְכָל מַה שֶּׁיֵּשׁ לְמַטָּה, כְּדוּגְמָתוֹ בַּיָּם. וְהַכֹּל אֶחָד. בָּרָא בָּעֶלְיוֹנִים הַמַּלְאָכִים, בָּרָא בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה בְּנֵי אָדָם, בָּרָא בַּיָּם לִוְיָתָן, כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר (שמותל"ו) לְחַבֵּר אֶת הָאֹהֶל לִהְיוֹת אֶחָד.

He stretched forth His right hand and created the world above; He stretched forth His left hand and created this world, as it says, “Mine hand hath laid the foundation of the earth and my right hand hath spanned the heavens; when I call unto them they stand up together” (Isa. 49, 13). All were created in one moment. And He made this world corresponding to the world above, and everything which is above has its counterpart here below, and everything here below has its counterpart in the sea; and yet all constitute a unity. He created angels in the upper worlds, human beings in this world, and the Leviathan in the sea, “to couple the tent together, that it might be one” (Ex. 36, 16).

Segment 3ג׳

כְּתִיב בָּאָדָם, (בראשית ט׳:ו׳) כִּי בְּצֶלֶם אֱלהִים עָשָׂה אֶת הָאָדָם. וּכְתִיב, (תהילים ח׳:ו׳) וַתְּחַסְּרֵהוּ מְעַט מֵאֱלֹהִים. אִי בְּנִי נָשָׁא יַקִּירִין בְּעוֹבַדָיְיהוּ (נ"א בעובדוי) כָּל הַאי, וְאִינּוּן מִתְאַבְּדִין (מטפה) מֵעָפָר דְּבֵירָא, בְּמָּה אַתְיָין לְשַׁאֲבָא מִנֵיהּ. וּבָחַר בָּעֶלְיוֹנִים, וּבָחַר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, לָעֶלְיוֹנִים לא קָרָא בָּנִים, לַתַּחְתּוֹנִים קָרָא בָּנִים. הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, (דברים י״ד:א׳) בָּנִים אַתֶּם לַה' אֱלהֵיכֶם. הוּא קָרָא לָהֶם בָּנִים, וְהֵם קָרְאוּ לוֹ אָב, דִּכְתִּיב, (ישעיהו ס״ג:ט״ז) כִּי אַתָּה אָבִינוּ. וּכְתִיב דּוֹדִי לִי וַאֲנִי לוֹ. הוא בָּחַר בִּי, וַאֲנִי בָּחַרְתִּי בּוֹ.

He chose the supernal beings and He chose Israel; He did not call the beings of the upper worlds “sons”, but the Israelites He did call sons, as it says: “Sons are ye to the Lord your God” (Deut. XIV,1). He calls them “sons” and they call Him “father”, “For thou art our father” (LXIII, 16). Hence it says: “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine”. He chose me and I chose Him also.
