Segment 1א׳

וַיַּרְא. ויַּרְא דְּהָכָא, כֹּלָּא בְּרוּחַ קוּדְשָׁא אִסְתָּכַל וְחָמָא, וּבְגִין כַּךְ אִסְתָּכַּל בֵּיהּ וְקָטַל לֵיהּ, וְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא סִבֵב כֹּלָּא, לִמְהַךְ לְהַהוּא בֵּירָא, כְּמָה דְּאָזַל יַעֲקֹב לְגַבֵּי הַהוּא בֵּירָא, דִּכְתִּיב, (שמות ב׳:ט״ו) וַיֵּשֶׁב עַל הַבְּאֵר. בְּיַעֲקֹב כְּתִיב, (בראשית כ״ט:ב׳) וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה בְּאֵר. בְּמֹשֶׁה כְּתִיב, וַיֵּשֶׁב בְּאֶרֶץ מִדְיָן וַיֵּשֶׁב עַל הַבְּאֵר. בְּגִין דְּמֹשֶׁה וְיַעֲקֹב, אַף עַל גַּב דִּבְדַרְגָּא חֲדָא הֲווֹ, אִסְתָּלַק מֹשֶׁה בְּהַאי יַתִּיר מִנֵּיהּ.

The word “saw” here indicates discernment through the holy spirit, and therefore he did not shrink from killing the Egyptian. Now the Holy One, blessed be He, so ordered matters that Moses might come to the same well to which Jacob came. It says here: “And he sat down by (‘al, lit. upon) a well” (Ibid. 5, 15), and of Jacob it says, “And he looked, and behold, a well” (Gen. 19, 2). This shows that although they belonged to the same degree (of sanctity), Moses in this ascended higher than Jacob.’

Segment 2ב׳

רִבִּי יוֹסֵי וְרִבִּי יִצְחָק הֲווֹ אַזְלֵי בְּאוֹרְחָא. אָמַר רִבִּי יוֹסֵי, הַהוּא בְּאֵר דְּחָמָא יַעֲקֹב, וְחָמָא מֹשֶׁה, אִי דָּא הֲוָה הַהוּא בֵּירָא, דְּחָפַר אַבְרָהָם וְיִצְחָק. אֲמַר לֵיהּ לָאו. אֶלָּא, בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּאִתְבְּרֵי עָלְמָא, אִתְבְּרֵי הַאי בֵּירָא. וּבְעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת בֵּין הַשְּׁמָשׁוֹת, אִתְבְּרֵי פּוּמָא דִּילֵיהּ, וְהַאי אִיהוּ בְּאֵר דְּחָמוּ יַעֲקֹב וּמֹשֶׁה.

As R. Jose and R. Isaac were once walking together, the former said: ‘Was the well which both Jacob and Moses saw the same one which was digged by Abraham and Isaac?’ Said R. Isaac: ‘No! This well was created when the world was created, and its mouth was formed on the eve of the Sabbath of Creation, in the twilight.’ That was the well which Jacob and Moses saw.’

Segment 3ג׳

מַתְנִיתִין. אִינּוּן דְּרֹדְפֵי קְשׁוֹט, אִינּוּן דְּתַבְעֵי רָזָא דִּמְהֵימָנוּתָא. אִינּוּן דְּאִתְדְּבָקוּ בְּקִשּׁוּרָא מְהֵימָנָא. אִינּוּן דְּיָדְעִין אוֹרְחוֹי דְּמַלְכָּא עִלָּאָה. קְרִיבוּ שִׁמְעוּ.

Matnitin (our teaching). Those who pursue truth, those who seek out the mystery of faith, those who cleave to the bond of faithfulness, those who know the ways of the supernal King: draw near and hear.

Segment 4ד׳

כַּד סְלִיקוּ תְּרֵין, וְנַפְקוּ לְקַדְמוּת חַד, מְקַבְּלִין לֵיהּ בֵּין תְּרֵין דְּרוֹעִין. תְּרֵין נַחְתֵּי לִתְלַתָא (נ"א לתתא) תְּרֵין אִינּוּן, חַד מִינָיְיהוּ חַקְלָא דְּתַפּוּחִין קַדִּישִׁין אִיהוּ מֵהַאי בֵּירָא יַתְבֵי (תרין יתבי) מוֹתְבָא דִּנְבִיאֵי (ס"א בנוי) יַנְקִין בְּהוּ. חַד בֵּינַיְיהוּ, חִבּוּרָא אִיהוּ דְּכֹלָּא, אִיהוּ נָטִיל מִכֹּלָּא

When two ascended and went out to meet one, they receive him between two arms. Two go down to three. They are two: one of them is the holy “Field of Apples”. From this well those who sit in the session of the prophets suck at them. One among them is the joining of all; it takes from all…

הַהוּא בֵּירָא קַדִּישָׁא, קָאִים תְּחוֹתַיְיהוּ, חַקְלָא דְּתַפּוּחִין קַדִּישִׁין אִיהוּ מֵהַאי בֵּירָא אִתְשַׁקְיָין עֲדָרַיָּיא, דְרַעֵי מֹשֶׁה בְּמָדְבְּרָא, מֵהָאִי בֵּירָא אִתְשַׁקְיָין עֲדָרִיָיא דְבָּרִיר יַעֲקֹב כָּד בָּרִיר לוֹן לְגּוֹ חוּלָקֵיה כָּל אִינּוּן רְתִיכִין, כָּל אִינּוּן מָארֵי דְּגַדְפִּין. תְּלַת קַיְימִין רְבִיעִין עַל הַאי בֵּירָא. הַאי בֵּירָא מִנַּיְיהוּ אִתְמְלֵי. אֲדֹנָ"י אִתְקְרֵי, עַל דָּא כְּתִּיב, (דברים ג׳:כ״ד) אֲדֹנָי יֶיִ' אַתָּה הַחִלּוֹתָ וְגוֹ'. וּכְתִיב (דניאל ט׳:י״ז) וְהָאֵר פָּנֶיךָ עַל מִקְדָּשְׁךָ הַשָּׁמֵם לְמַעַן אֲדֹנָי, אֲדוֹן כָּל הָאָרֶץ, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, (יהושע ג׳:י״א) הִנֵּה אֲרוֹן הַבְּרִית אֲדוֹן כָּל הָאָרֶץ. בֵּיהּ גָּנִיז חַד מְקוֹרָא קַדִּישָׁא, דִּנְבִיעַ בֵּיהּ תָּדִיר, וְאַמְלֵי לֵיהּ, יְיָ' צְבָאוֹת אִקְרֵי. בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְעָלַם וּלְעָלְמֵי עָלְמִין. (ע"כ)

That holy well stands beneath them. It is the holy “Field of Apples”. From this well are watered the flocks that Moses pastured in the wilderness. From this well are watered the flocks that Jacob sorted, when he sorted them into his own portion — all those Chariots, all those winged creatures. Three stand couched over this well. This well is filled from them. It is called Adonai, and therefore it is written: “O Lord (Adonai) God, You have begun, etc.” (Deut. 3, 24); and it is written: “And cause Your face to shine upon Your desolate sanctuary, for my Lord’s (Adonai) sake” (Dan. 9, 17) — the Lord of all the earth, as it is written: “Behold, the ark of the covenant, the Lord of all the earth” (Josh. 3, 11). In it is hidden a holy source that flows in it continually and fills it; it is called Tetragrammaton Zebaoth. Blessed be He for ever and to all eternity.
