Segment 1
And the loaves of the thank-offering are forty loaves: ten wafers, ten soaked cakes, ten (Korach, folio 179a) of leaven, ten of unleavened bread. Behold, they are forty, corresponding to the Yod of the Tetragrammaton, four faces of man; the Yod of the Tetragrammaton, four faces of the lion; the Yod of the Tetragrammaton, four faces of the ox; the Yod of the Tetragrammaton, four faces of the eagle. This is the first ordering of the King's table, which is the ten things that a man must observe at the Sabbath table.
Segment 2
One: to set the table as one who eats before the King. That is what is written, “This is the table that is before the Lord.” The second: the washing of the hands, up to the measure the Rabbis decreed, which is five knots, in which are yad (fourteen) joints. And so too there are fourteen joints in the left hand. And they are ko'ach (twenty-eight) joints. Corresponding to them is the ko'ach of the Lord, which is the twenty-eight letters of the first verse of the work of creation, of which it is said, “And now, I pray, let the power (ko'ach) of the Lord be great” (Num. 14, 17).
Segment 3
And the ten fingers allude to the ten utterances of the work of creation. And therefore the sages of the Mishnah have explained: whoever makes light of the washing of the hands is uprooted from the world. Why? Because in them is the mystery of the ten utterances and the twenty-eight letters by which the world was created.
