He saw the letter mim descending upon them, which is the sign of the Angel of Death, so he snatched it and drew it to him and at once the Angel of Death drew back.
Segment 2
What is the reason? Because when Phineas was zealous in his heart, he clothed himself in Isaac and rose to be, in the reckoning, two hundred and eight (Resh-Heth); and so his name comes to two hundred and eight, and so Isaac comes to it. When he saw the letter Mem flying in the firmament, he snatched it and joined it with himself, and at once it became Resh-Mem-Heth. This is what is written, “And he took a spear (romach) in his hand.”
Segment 3
For the letter Mem was the first sign for the first man, to build death over the world; for this letter was flying over the head of Adam at the time when it is written, “and she took of its fruit” (Gen. 3, 6) — the Mem of mi-piryo (of its fruit). And it was waiting for Vau-Tau, at the time when it is written (Introduction to Bereshit, folio 12b), “and she ate (va-tochal)”, “and she gave (va-titen)”, “and they were opened (va-tippakachnah)”. Then death (mavet) was built over the world.
