Section 67 of 129 in Pinchas — 6 segments

Segment 1

While they were going, a great eagle came, circled over their heads, and stood over them. R. Phineas said: Assuredly it is now a time of favour; in this hour the gates of mercy are opened to all the sick, and it is the time to heal them — even though they are prisoners of the King (a variant reads: the King's). For this eagle is a sign of mercy.

Segment 2

He opened and said: “As an eagle that stirs up her nest, hovers over her young,” etc. (Deut. 32, 11). There is none in the world as merciful to its young as the eagle; and it has been explained, for it is written, “and the young eagles shall eat it” (Prov. 30, 17), for it is merciful to its young. And because it is now a time of mercy, this eagle came and circled over us. In this hour there is mercy for all the sick. And this is what is written: “O Lord, in the morning You shall hear my voice” (Ps. 5, 4) — and this is the morning of Abraham, and his arousal.

Segment 3

Meanwhile the eagle circled and passed before them. R. Phineas said: Eagle, eagle, what are you to us? If you have come on a mission of your Master, behold, we are here. If you have come for another matter (a variant reads: sign), behold, we are here, ready. The eagle rose upward and was hidden from them, and they sat.
