Section 6 of 129 in Pinchas — 6 segments

Segment 1

R. Jesse opened: “By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion” (Ps. 137, 1). It should have said “Jerusalem”, as it is written, “If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget” (Ps. 137, 5). What is “when we remembered Zion”? A man who had a precious palace, fitting and beautiful; robbers came and burned it. Whose grief is it? Is it not the grief of the master of the palace? So too here: the Shekinah dwells in exile. Whose grief is it? Is it not the grief of the Righteous One? And this goes as has been explained, as it is written, “The righteous perishes” (Isa. 57, 1) — perishes in very truth. So too here, “when we remembered Zion”: when we remembered that grief of his over his union with her — it is his grief.

Segment 2

Said R. Jesse: Whoever honours the name of his Master in this, and guards this, merits that his Master should honour him above all. From where do we know it? From Joseph, as it is written, “And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had” (Gen. 41, 43), and it is written, “and he set him over all the land of Egypt.” And not only this, but when Israel crossed the sea, the coffin of Joseph entered within it first, and the waters did not keep their standing before him. This is what is written, “The sea saw it, and fled” (Ps. 114, 3). What is “and fled”? Rather, it saw the one of whom it is written, “and he fled, and went outside” (Gen. 39, 12).

Segment 3

Observe: he merited honour in his life and merited honour in his death. In his life — why? Because of that time when he would not cleave to her, as it is written, “But he refused, and said to his master's wife” (Gen. 39, 8), and it is written, “he did not listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her.” Therefore he merited in this world. Since it is written, “And she caught him by his garment,” and it is written, “and he fled, and went outside,” he merited afterwards to enter within the supernal curtain. And so it was fitting for him: his own he took in this world, and his own he took in the other world.
