רִבִּי חִיָּיא פָּתַח, (תהילים פ״א:ו׳) עֵדוּת בִּיהוֹסֵף שָׂמוֹ וְגוֹ'. הָא אוֹקְמוּהָ, דְּאוֹלִיף שִׁבְעִין פִּתְקִין, וְלָשׁוֹן הַקֹּדֶשׁ יַתִיר. הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, (תהילים פ״א:ו׳) שְׂפַת לֹא יָדַעְתִּי אֶשְׁמָע. אֲבָל מַאי עֵדוּת. תָּא חֲזֵי, בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּאִתְּתֵיהּ דְּפוֹטִיפַר הֲוַת אֲחִידָא בֵּיהּ לְהַהִיא מִלָּה, הֲוָה יוֹסֵף עָבִיד גַּרְמֵיהּ כְּמַאן דְּלָא יָדַע לִישָׁנָא דִּילָהּ, וְכֵן בְּכָל יוֹמָא עַד הַהִיא שַׁעֲתָא בַּתְרַיְיתָא, דִּכְתִיב (בראשית ל״ט:י״ב) וַתִּתְפְּשֵׂהוּ בְּבִגְדוֹ. מַאי וַתִּתְפְּשֵׂהוּ. אֶלָּא בְּגִין דְּעָבִיד גַּרְמֵיהּ כְּמַאן דְּלָא יָדַע לִישָׁנָא. וְרוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ צָוַוח לָקֳבְלֵיהּ, (משלי ז׳:ה׳) לִשְׁמָרְךָ מֵאִשָׁה זָרָה מִנָּכְרִיָּה אֲמָרֶיהָ הֶחלִיקָה. מַאי קָא מַשְׁמַע לָן. אֶלָּא כָּל מַאן דְּנָטִיר גַּרְמֵיהּ מֵהַאי, אִתְקְשַׁר בָּהּ בִּשְׁכִינְתָּא, וְאָחִיד בְּהַהוּא עֵדוּת. וּמַאי הוּא. ה' דְּאִתּוֹסַף בֵּיהּ. דִּכְתִיב, עֵדוּת בִּיהוֹסֵף שָׂמוֹ. אוּף הָכָא י' אִתּוֹסַף בְּפִנְחָס, עַל דְּקַנֵּי בְּהַאי.

R. Hiya opened: “He appointed it in Yehosef (Joseph) for a testimony,” etc. (Ps. 81, 6). It has been explained that he learnt seventy scripts, and the holy tongue besides. This is what is written, “I heard a language that I did not know” (Ps. 81, 6). But what is “testimony”? Observe: at the hour when Potiphar's wife was taking hold of him for that matter, Joseph made himself as one who did not know her language, and so every day, until that last hour, as it is written, “And she caught him by his garment” (Gen. 39, 12). What is “and she caught him”? Rather, because he made himself as one who did not know the language. And the holy spirit cried out before him, “To keep you from the strange woman, from the alien woman who makes her words smooth” (Prov. 7, 5). What does this teach us? Rather, whoever guards himself from this is bound to her, to the Shekinah, and holds fast to that testimony. And what is it? The He that was added to him, as it is written, “He appointed it in Yehosef for a testimony.” So too here: a Yod was added to Phineas, because he was zealous in this.
