Section 58 of 129 in Pinchas — 3 segments

Segment 1

R. Judah said: ‘Pray tell us some of your fine ideas on the New Year.’ R. Simeon thereupon discoursed on the verse: “And it fell on a day, and the sons of God came”, etc. (Job 1, 6). ‘The expression, “And it fell on a day”,’ he said, ‘always refers to a day on which there is trouble, here, the New Year.

Segment 2

At all times there are two days. What is the reason? So that Isaac should be comprised of judgement and mercy — two days, and not one. For were he found alone, he would destroy the world. And therefore it is written twice: “And it fell on a day,” “And it fell on a day.”

Segment 3

The “sons of God” are the great Beth Din, the seventy Chieftains who always surround the King. “To stand before the Lord”: this indicates that sentence is first passed on those who do not heed the honour of the Holy Name to save it from being profaned in the world.
