Segment 1
And David made himself poor, pious, and a servant. This is what is written, “A Prayer of David. Incline Your ear, O Lord, and answer me; for I am poor and needy. Keep my soul, for I am pious; O You my God, save Your servant who trusts in You” (Ps. 86, 1-2). He made himself poor at the gate of the King, of which it is said, “O Lord, open my lips” (Ps. 51, 17). Adonai — heichal (palace): he made himself poor at the gate of the palace of the King. And what is written? “Incline Your ear, O Lord, and answer me” — and this is the lower Shekinah, which is an ear to receive prayers and to hear them; as it is written, “For He has not despised nor abhorred the lowliness of the poor, neither has He hidden His face from him; but when he cried to Him, He heard” (Ps. 22, 25).
Segment 2
For he made himself poor and lowly (dal), from the side of the letter Daleth of echad (one), to ask of Aleph-Heth, which is the Central Column; to fulfil in him, “I was brought low (dalloti), and He saved me” (Ps. 116, 6), so that Messiah son of Ephraim should not die. And he asks of Him at that gate for the sake of Israel, the poor, to fulfil in them, “And the poor people You save” (II Sam. 22, 28).
Segment 3
And afterwards he asks for the sake of the priests, that the service be restored to its place; and he made himself a servant. And afterwards, that He give them the Torah from the side of chesed, to do kindness (gemul) with the Daleth of the Torah — and therefore he made himself pious. Thus he came to the three supernal sefirot (emanations); he opened and said, “Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty; neither do I exercise myself in things too great, or in things too wonderful for me” (Ps. 131, 1).
