Segment 1א׳

וְכַד בַּר נָשׁ מִית, מַה כְּתִיב בָּהּ בְּהַאי נֶפֶשׁ (משלי ו׳:כ״ב) בְּהִתְהַלֶּכְךָ תַּנְחֶה אוֹתָךְ בְּשָׁכְבְּךָ תִּשְׁמוֹר עָלֶיךָ, וַהֲקִיצוֹתָ לִתְחִיַּית הַמֵּתִים, הִיא תְשִׂיחֶךָ. דָּא לִתְחִיַּית הַמֵּתִים שַׁפִּיר, דְּיוֹקִים לֵיהּ לְבַּר נָשׁ, אֲבָל לְאַגְרָא לְנִשְׁמְתָא בְּעָלְמָא דְּאָתֵי, מַאי הֲוִי.

And when a man dies, what is written of this soul? “When you walk, it shall lead you; when you lie down, it shall watch over you; and when you awake” — to the resurrection of the dead — “it shall talk with you” (Prov. 6, 22). This is well for the resurrection of the dead, that it shall raise the man up; but for the reward of the soul in the world to come, what is there?

אֶלָּא קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא מַלְבִּישׁ לָהּ כְּקַדְמֵיתָא בַּעֲנָנֵי כָּבוֹד. כְּקַדְמֵיתָא תֵּיעוּל בְּמַרְאָה, דְּאִיהוּ כְּגַוְונָא דְּגוּפָא, כָּלִיל בְּרמ"ח אֵיבָרִים. אוּף הָכִי תֵּיעוּל בַּמַרְאָה, כָּלִיל בְּמָאתַיִם וְאַרְבָּעִים וּשְׁמֹנָה פִיקּוּדִין וּבְרמ"ח. נְהִירִין דְּמִתְפָּרְשָׁן מֵהַהוּא מַרְאָה. דְּאִתְּמַר בֵּיהּ, (במדבר י״ב:ו׳) וַיֹּאמֶר אִם יִהְיֶה נְבִיאֲכֶם יְיָ בַּמַרְאָה אֵלָיו אֶתְודָּע. וּבִלְבוּשִׁין דַּעֲנָנֵי כָּבוֹד (בראשית ט׳:ט״ז) וּרְאִיתִיהָ לִזְכּוֹר בְּרִית עוֹלָם, דָּא אַסְפַּקְלַרְיָאָה הַמְּאִירָה. (במדבר י״ב:ו׳) בַּחֲלוֹם אֲדַבֵּר בּוֹ, דָּא אַסְפַּקְלַרְיָאָה דְּלָא נַהֲרָא. כָּלִיל מִשס"ה נְהִירִין, כְּחֻשְׁבַּן יְשֵׁנָה. וְהַיְינוּ (שיר השירים ה׳:ב׳) אֲנִי יְשֵׁנָה. חַד בְּעָלְמָא דֵּין. וְחָד בְּעָלְמָא דְּאָתֵי. וְאִינּוּן בְּעוֹבְדֵי יְדוֹי דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא.

Rather, the Holy One, blessed be He, clothes it as at first in the clouds of glory. As at first it enters into a vision, which is like the likeness of the body, comprised of two hundred and forty-eight limbs, so too it enters into the vision comprised of two hundred and forty-eight commandments, and of two hundred and forty-eight lights that are spread out from that vision, of which it is said, “And He said: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord make Myself known to him in a vision” (Num. 12, 6). And in the garments of the clouds of glory: “and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant” (Gen. 9, 16) — this is the luminous mirror. “I speak with him in a dream” (Num. 12, 6) — this is the mirror that does not shine, comprised of three hundred and sixty-five lights, as the number of yeshenah (asleep). And this is “I sleep (yeshenah)” (S. S. 5, 2). One in this world, and one in the world to come. And they are among the works of the hands of the Holy One, blessed be He.

Segment 3ג׳

וְרָזָא דִּלְהוֹן, (שמות ג׳:ט״ו) זֶה שְּׁמִי לְעוֹלָם. יָ"הּ עִם שְׁמִי, שָׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשָּׁה וְשִׁשִׁים. ו"ה עִם זִכְרִי, מָאתַּיִם וּשְׁמֹנָה וְאַרְבָּעִים. וְכָרוֹזִין נַחְתִין וְסַלְּקִין קַמֵּיהּ, הָבוּ יְקָר (ס"א לדיוקנא) לִיקָרָא דְּמַלְכָּא.

And their mystery: “This is My name for ever” (Ex. 3, 15). Yod-He with shemi (My name): three hundred and sixty-five. Vau-He with zichri (My memorial): two hundred and forty-eight. And heralds go down and go up before it: Give honour (a variant reads: to the image) to the honour of the King!

Segment 4ד׳

וְהַיְינוּ (בראשית א׳:כ״ז) וַיִּבְרָא אֱלֹהִים אֶת הָאָדָם בְּצַלְמוֹ בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים בָּרָא אוֹתוֹ. וְהוּא דְּעֲבַד לֵיהּ בִּתְרֵין דִּיוּקְנִין, בִּתְרֵין גַּנִּים (נ"א פנים) דְּאִתְּמַר עָלַיְיהוּ (שיר השירים ה) הַיּוֹשֶׁבֶת בַּגַּנִּים אִיהוּ עִילַּת עַל כֹּלָּא דְּאִתְּמַר עָלָהּ (דברים ד׳:ט״ו) כִּי לֹא רְאִיתֶם כָּל תְּמוּנָה. וְעַל שְׁאַר דִּיוּקְנִין כְּתִיב, תְּמוּנַת כָּל וְגוֹ'. (במדבר י״ב:ח׳) וּתְמוּנַת יְיָ יַבִּיט. וְתרי"ג מַלְאָכִין סַלְּקִין לָהּ לְנִשְׁמְתָא. בְּאִלֵּין דִּיוּקְנִין, כֻּלְּהוּ וּפְנֵיהֶם וְכַנְפֵיהֶם פְּרוּדוֹת, לְקַיֵּים קְרָא דִּכְתִּיב בְּהוֹן (שמות י״ט:ד׳) וָאֶשָּׂא אֶתְכֶם עַל כַּנְפֵי נְשָׁרִים וָאָבִיא אֶתְכֶם אֵלָי.

And this is “And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him” (Gen. 1, 27). And it is He who made him in two images, in two gardens (a variant reads: faces), of which it is said, “You who dwell in the gardens” (S. S. 8, 13). He is the Cause over all, of whom it is said, “For you saw no manner of form” (Deut. 4, 15). And of the other images it is written, “the form of any,” etc., “and the form of the Lord does he behold” (Num. 12, 8). And six hundred and thirteen angels raise the soul up in these images — all of them, “and their faces and their wings were separate” — to fulfil the verse that is written of them, “and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you to Myself” (Ex. 19, 4).

כְּגַוְונָא דְּנַפְקוּ מִמִּצְרַיִם, וְאַזְלוּ בַּעֲנָנֵי כָּבוֹד, וּבְכָל הַהוּא יְקָר, כְּהַהוּא גַּוְונָא תְּהֵא מַפְקָנוּתָא דְּנִשְׁמְתָא, מִגוּפָא דְּטִפָּה סְרוּחָה, לְמֵיזָל לִתְרֵין גַּנִּים, דְּאִתְבְּרֵי שְׁמַיָא וְאַרְעָא דִּלְהוֹן בְּשֵׁם יְיָ. וּבְגִינֵיהּ אִתְּמַר, (תהילים צ״ו:י״א) יִשְׂמְחוּ הַשָּׁמַיִם וְתָגֵל הָאָרֶץ. בְּהַהוּא זִמְנָא יִתְקַיֵּים בְּבַּר נָשׁ (ישעיהו ל׳:כ׳) וְלֹא יִכָּנֵף עוֹד מוֹרֶיךָ לְגַבָּיךְ, (ישעיהו ו׳:ב׳) בִּשְׁתַּיִם יְכַסֶּה פָּנָיו, אֶלָּא וְהָיוּ עֵינֶיךָ רוֹאוֹת אֶת מוֹרֶיךָ. וּמִסִּטְרָא דְּאִלֵּין מַרְאוֹת, זָכָה מֹשֶׁה רַבֵּינוּ עָלָיו הֲשָׁלוֹם, רַבָּן שֶׁל נְבִיאִים וַחֲכָמִים. אָמַר בּוּצִינָא קַדִישָׁא, אַנְתְּ הוּא דְּזָכִית בְּחַיָיךְ, לְמָה דְּיִזְכּוּן צַדִיקַיָּא בָּתַר חַיֵּיהוֹן, זַכָּאָה חוּלָקָךְ.

Just as they went out of Egypt and went in the clouds of glory, and in all that honour, in that same way shall be the going out of the soul from the body of a putrid drop, to go to the two gardens, whose heaven and earth were created with the name of the Tetragrammaton. And for its sake it is said, “Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice” (Ps. 96, 11). At that time there shall be fulfilled in a man, “yet shall your Teacher not hide Himself any more” (Isa. 30, 20) from you — “with two he covered his face” (Isa. 6, 2) — but “your eyes shall see your Teacher.” And from the side of these visions Moses our Teacher, peace be upon him, the master of the prophets and the sages, was found worthy. Said the Holy Lamp: You are he who merited in your lifetime what the righteous shall merit after their lifetime. Happy is your portion!
