Segment 1
And further, it is said in the first composition that the other side is pleased to rule over a righteous man more than over anything, and then it does not care for the whole world. Meanwhile, behold, a shadow presented itself to them, and he said to him: From where do we know this? From Job. For the Holy One, blessed be He, saw that the generation was liable to destruction, and Satan came to accuse. The Holy One, blessed be He, said to him, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him in all the earth” (Job 1, 8) — that the generation might be saved through him. And it is a parable of a shepherd to whom a wolf came to tear his flock and destroy it. What did that shepherd do, who was wise? He gave it a lamb, strong and fat and larger than all of them, the one after which they all used to be led. And in its desire to rule over that good lamb, it forgot (a variant reads: left) all of them. What did that shepherd do? At the time when the wolf was busy with that lamb, the shepherd fled with the flock and set them in their place; and afterwards he returned to the lamb and saved it from the wolf.
Segment 2
So the Holy One, blessed be He, does with the generation: the Holy One, blessed be He, gives the righteous man into the power of the accuser, to save the generation for his sake. And if he is strong like Jacob, of whom it is said, “And a man wrestled with him” (Gen. 32, 25), how much more, how much more does he overcome him, until he says, “Let me go.” He said: Shadow, shadow, so it is. Happy is the portion of that righteous man who is strong to bear sufferings; how much more so he who overcomes his accuser by them. For his dominion is over the whole generation, and it is accounted to him as though he had saved them; and the Holy One, blessed be He, makes him a shepherd over them in his place. And for this the Faithful Shepherd merited to be a shepherd over Israel; and not only this, but thus He set him to rule over them in the world to come, because he saved them, that they were not lost from there, for he led them in the Torah and in good deeds.
Segment 3
Meanwhile, here was the Faithful Shepherd. He said to them: And why is the right arm smitten? For the way of all the masters of healing is to let blood first from the right arm; yet the left arm is near the heart — why do they not let blood from it? He said to him: Because the Holy One, blessed be He, does not wish to smite more, for with this it is enough; and if the sickness grows heavy upon the limbs of the body, one lets blood from the left arm.
