Segment 1
“And on the fifteenth day,” etc. (Num. 29, 12). R. Abba opened: “And the ark rested in the seventh month,” etc. (Gen. 8, 4). Observe: all these days the Mother goes over the children, so that the other side shall not rule over them, and in order to save them. Once her children are saved, and behold, they sit in the booths, kept under guard, on the first day and the second day she commands Israel to make a meal for the chieftains of the other nations, and she does not rest there. On the third day, which is the seventeenth of the month, she begins to rest upon them. This is what is written, “And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat” — mountains within which all curses and rebellions rest.
Segment 2
R. Eleazar said: On the first day of the Festival she does not rest upon them, nor on the second day, but on the third day, on which it adds and diminishes, she rests upon them: it adds letters and diminishes offerings, as it is written, “eleven (ashtei asar),” etc. And so it befits one of evil eye: because the first day and the second day are the joy of her children, and they distribute portions to them. From the third day onward, when she rests upon them, what is written? “And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen” (Gen. 8, 5). “And the waters decreased continually”: these are the offerings, which go on decreasing. And as they decrease, so too their good decreases.
