Segment 1א׳

וּבְחִבּוּרָא קַדְמָאָה (במדבר כ״ח:כ״ו) וּבְיוֹם הַבִּכּוּרִים בְּהַקְרִיבְכֶם מִנְחָה חֲדָשָׁה וְגוֹ'. אָמַר רִבִּי אַבָּא, יוֹם הַבִּכּוּרִים, מַאן יוֹם. דָּא נָהָר הַיּוֹצֵא מִעֵדֶן, דְּאִיהוּ יוֹמָא מֵאִינּוּן בְּכוֹרִין עִלָּאִין. וְדָא אִיהוּ דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא תַּלְיָא בֵּיהּ, וְאִיהוּ אַפִּיק כָּל רָזִין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא. וּבְגִין דְּאִיהוּ אִילָּנָא דְּחַיֵּי, פְּרִי אִילָנִין אִצְטְרִיכוּ לְאַיְיתָאָה.

And in the first composition: “Also on the day of the first-fruits, when you bring a new meal-offering,” etc. (Num. 28, 26). R. Abba said: “The day of the first-fruits” — which day? This is the river that goes forth from Eden, which is a day of those supernal first-fruits. And this is that on which the Torah depends, and it brings forth all the mysteries of the Torah. And because it is the tree of life, the fruit of trees had to be brought.

רעיא מהימנא (במדבר כ״ח:כ״ו) וּבְיוֹם הַבִּכּוּרִים בְּהַקְרִיבְכֶם מִנְחָה חֲדָשָׁה וְגוֹ'. רִבִּי אַבָּא אָמַר, יוֹם הַבִּכּוּרִים אִינּוּן בִּכּוּרִים עִלָּאִין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא. הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, (שמות כ״ג:י״ט) רֵאשִׁית בִּכּוּרֵי אַדְמָתְךָ תָּבִיא וְגוֹ'. אָמַר רַעְיָא מְהֵימְנָא, כְּגַוְונָא דִּבְכוֹרִים לְאִמְּהוֹן, אוּף הָכִי אִתְקְרִיאוּ פֵּירוֹת בִּכּוּרִים, דְּפֵירוֹת דְּאִילָנִין, (הושע ט׳:י׳) כְּבִכּוּרָה בַּתְּאֵנָה, הָכִי יִשְׂרָאֵל קַדְמוֹנִים וּבִכּוּרִים לְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, מִכָּל אוּמִין דְּעָלְמָא, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, (ירמיה ב) קֹדֶשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל לַיְדוָֹ"ד וְגוֹ'. וּבְגִין דָּא אִתְּמַר בְּהוֹן, (שמות כ״ג:י״ט) תָּבִיא בֵּית יְהוָֹה אֱלֹהֶיךָ. וּבְגִין דָּא אוּמִין עוֹבְדֵי כּוֹכָבִים וּמַזָּלוֹת, דְּאִתְּמַר בְּהוֹן (ישעיהו ט׳:י״א) וַיֹּאכְלוּ אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּכָל פֶּה. יֶאֱשָׁמוּ רָעָה תָּבֹא אֲלֵיהֶם.

Ra'aya Meheimna. “Also on the day of the first-fruits, when you bring a new meal-offering,” etc. (Num. 28, 26). R. Abba said: “The day of the first-fruits” — these are the supernal first-fruits of the Torah. This is what is written, “The choicest first-fruits of your land you shall bring,” etc. (Ex. 23, 19). The Faithful Shepherd said: Just as there are firstborn (bechorim) to their mothers, so too fruits are called bikkurim (first-fruits) — the fruits of trees: “as the first-ripe in the fig-tree” (Hos. 9, 10). So Israel are the earliest and the first-fruits to the Holy One, blessed be He, of all the nations of the world. This is what is written, “Israel is the Lord's hallowed portion,” etc. (Jer. 2). And therefore it is said of them, “you shall bring into the house of the Lord your God” (Ex. 23, 19). And therefore the idolatrous nations, of whom it is said, “and they devour Israel with open mouth” (Isa. 9, 11) — “shall be held guilty; evil shall come upon them.”

אוּף הָכִי ו' דְּכָלִיל שִׁית סְפִירָאָן, וְאִיהוּ בֶּן י"ד, אִתְקְרֵי בְּכֹ"ר. וְכָל עַנְפִין דְּנָפְקִין מִנֵּיה דִּבְּהוֹן רָאשִׁין, כְּגַוְונָא דָּא אִתְקְרִיאוּ בִּכּוּרִים. ו' אִיהוּ נָהָר, מֵאִינּוּן בִּכּוּרִים עִלָּאִין, וְהַהוּא נָהָר נָפִיק מִעֵדֶן. וְדָא אִיהוּ דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא תַּלְיָיא בֵּיהּ. וְכַד נָפִיק נַפְקֵי כָּל רָזִין דְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, וּבְגִין דְּאִיהוּ אִילָנָא דְּחַיֵּי אוֹרַיְיתָא, הֲדָא הוּא (נ"א חדא היא) דִּכְתִּיב, (משלי ג׳:י״ח) עֵץ חַיִּים הִיא לַמַּחֲזִיקִים בָּהּ. וּפִקּוּדִין דִּילָהּ דַּמְיָין לְאִיבָּא פְּרִי דְּאִילָנִין, אִצְטְרִיכוּ לְאַיְיתָאָה.

So too Vau, which comprises six sefirot, and is the son of Yod-He, is called bechor. And all the branches that go forth from it, in which there are heads, are likewise called first-fruits. Vau is a river, of those supernal first-fruits; and that river goes forth from Eden. And this is that on which the Torah depends; and when it goes forth, all the mysteries of the Torah go forth. And because the Torah is a tree of life — this is what is written (a variant reads: it is one, as is written), “She is a tree of life to those who lay hold upon her” (Prov. 3, 18) — and its commandments are like produce, the fruit of trees, they had to be brought.
