Ra'aya Meheimna. “And in your new moons” (Num. 28, 11): these are Jacob and Joseph — “These are the generations of Jacob: Joseph” (Gen. 37, 2) — who are renewed over the moon. I have found in the Book of Enoch that it says: just as on the New Moon, when the moon is purified to draw near to her husband, one portion must be given to the other side, of that kind of hers; so too a woman must, at the time when she is purified to draw near to her husband, give one portion to the other side, of that kind of his.
Segment 2
And what is it? That portion is her nails, with their dirt, and a little of the hair of the head; because she must comb the head, and wind them together, one with the other, so that that evil side should not go after her to do her harm, and may be parted from her on every side. And what shall she do with that hair and nails? After she has wound them together, she must put them in a place where people do not pass, or within the lower holes of the courtyard, and hide them there. (And further: “And in your new moons,” they said — belongs here.)
Segment 3
And further: “And in your new moons” — the sages of the Mishnah said that when they would sanctify the months by the court, they would kindle beacons on the tops of the mountains, and they would say: “Like this, see and sanctify.” At times the moon was like this: she looked upward with her horn. And at times she looked downward, like this; at times she looked to the east, like this; at times to the west, like this; at times to the south, and at times to the north. And this is her gazing toward the six sides which tiferet comprises, which is Vau: gedulah, gevurah, tiferet, netzach, hod, yesod.
