Zohar, Pinchas 1
Section 1 of 129 in Pinchas — 2 segments
Segment 1
“And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Phineas, the son of Eleazar,” etc. (Num. 25, 10). R. Eleazar opened and said: “Hear, my son, the instruction of your father, and do not forsake the law of your mother” (Prov. 1, 8). (Yitro, folio 85a.) “Hear, my son, the instruction of your father” — this is the Holy One, blessed be He. “And do not forsake the law of your mother” — this is the Community of Israel. What is “the instruction of your father”? Instruction: this is the Torah, in which there are many rebukes, many punishments; as you say, “My son, do not despise the instruction of the Lord, nor be weary of His reproof” (Prov. 3, 11).
Segment 2
And because whoever studies the Torah in this world merits that many gates be opened for him in that world, many lights: at the hour when he departs from this world, she goes before him and goes to all the keepers of the gates, proclaiming and saying, “Open the gates, that the righteous nation may enter” (Isa. 26, 2). Prepare thrones for so-and-so, the servant of the King! For the Holy One, blessed be He, has no joy save in him who studies the Torah; how much more so a man who wakes in the night to study the Torah, for all the righteous who are in the Garden of Eden listen to his voice, and the Holy One, blessed be He, is found among them, as has been explained: “You who dwell in the gardens, the companions hearken to your voice: cause me to hear it” (S. S. 8, 13).
