Segment 1
(A variant reads: Happy are the righteous, who know holy ways to walk in them, so as not to walk after that evil serpent, the other side, the unclean one; and they part from it, and are not enticed after it. Happy are they in this world, happy are they in the world to come.) “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground.” (Gen. 2, 7) Dust it is, and not clay. Dust it is, and it shall return to dust, as it says “for dust you are, and to dust shall you return.” (Gen. 3, 19) (A variant reads: after he sinned he was made food for the serpent, and therefore, etc.) After he sinned — and therefore it is written of the serpent, “and dust shall you eat all the days of your life.” This dust is Adam, as it is written “for dust you are,” etc. And therefore “dust” is written, and “ground” is not written, nor “clay”; and it is written “and dust shall be the serpent’s food.” (Isa. 65, 25)
Segment 2
Until the Holy One, blessed be He, shall rouse Himself and shall clear away that unclean spirit from the world, as it is written “He will swallow up death for ever,” (Isa. 25, 8) etc.; and He shall raise up that dust, and rouse it to rejoice in the world, as it is written “Awake and sing, you that dwell in the dust,” (Isa. 26, 19) etc.
Segment 3
It is written “Now the serpent was subtle,” (Gen. 3, 1) and we have explained it. But the side that rides upon it gives it strength to rule, and to entice, and to lead astray. And this is the mystery of the male: for the male rules over the female and gives strength in her. The sun and the moon serve together and are never parted; darkness and gloom serve together. He is darkness, and she is gloom, as it says “and there was darkness, gloom” (Ex. 10, 22) — darkness and thick darkness. For there is darkness, and there is darkness.
