And the mixed multitude, in the manner in which it was said of them, “And when the people saw it, they trembled, and stood afar off” (Ex. 20, 15), so will they be far from the redemption; and they will see the students of the Torah and the holy people in all this honour, and they will be far from them. And if they wish to join with them, what is written of them? “No hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through” (Ex. 19, 13). At that time there shall be fulfilled in Israel, “The Lord alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with Him” (Deut. 32, 12); and this has been explained: proselytes are not accepted in the days of the Messiah. “And the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness” (I Sam. 2, 9) — these are the mixed multitude. And therefore the prophet said of them, “neither shall they enter into the land of Israel” (Ezek. 13, 9).
Segment 2
Elijah said: Faithful Shepherd, this is the hour to ascend on high. By an oath, do you speak — for it is for your sake that I wish to ascend; for the Holy One, blessed be He, gave me leave to reveal myself to you in your prison, in your burial, and to do kindness with you, for you are wounded by the sins of the people. This is what is written: “But he was wounded because of our transgressions” (Isa. 53, 5).
Segment 3
The Faithful Shepherd said to him: By an oath upon you, in the Name of the Tetragrammaton, do not delay, with all your power, for I am in great sorrow. “And he looked this way and that way, and he saw that there was no man” (Ex. 2, 12) to help me, to bring me out of this sorrow, in this burial of which it was said of me, “And they made his grave with the wicked” (Isa. 53, 9). And they do not recognise me, and I am reckoned in their eyes, among the wicked of the mixed multitude, like a dead dog that stinks among them; for the wisdom of the scribes shall stink among them, in every city and city, and in every place where Israel are scattered among them, among the kingdoms. And those of the mixed multitude have become shepherds over Israel, the flock of the Holy One, blessed be He, of whom it is said, “And you My sheep, the sheep of My pasture, are men” (Ezek. 34, 31); and they have no power to do kindness with the students of the Torah.
