Zohar, Mishpatim 5

Section 5 of 30 in Mishpatim — 5 segments

Segment 1

The next precept is to restore a lost object, and after it to restore what has been taken by robbery. Said the Holy Lamp: The Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to restore to you the lost thing you lost because of the mixed multitude — and that is your bride; for when the mixed multitude made the calf, your bride went out. This is as it is written, “and he cast the tablets out of his hands” (Ex. 32, 19).

Segment 2

And it was said to you, “Go, get down” — there it hints at your descent into the fourth exile. “Go”: as in “Go from your country” etc. (Gen. 12, 1). Here, three: “Lo, all these things does God work, twice, yes three times, with a man” (Job 33, 29). Here it hints “Go” — for yourself, three times, in exile; the fourth is “get down”, for the sake of the only daughter, your bride, who has fallen. This is as it is written, “She is fallen, she shall no more rise” (Amos 5, 2). And as soon as you descend for her sake, she shall rise through you; and this is that restoring of a lost object which is yours…

Segment 3

For it was not for nothing that the Torah was revealed to you more than to all Israel, and that it rose up to you, like the waters of the well that rose up to you, and not to the patriarchs and not to any man; for the well knows its master. And of this Torah it is said, “And from there to Beer; that is the well” etc. (Num. 21, 16). The well is full, and its waters do not go out. And it is a well of the waters of the Torah, which brings forth all waters; and all the waters of the world enter into it, and its waters do not go out.
