Section 19 of 30 in Mishpatim — 7 segments
Segment 1
The next precept is to bring the firstfruits; and after it, to make confession over the firstfruits; and after it, to make confession over the tithe. And the sages of the Mishnah raise a difficulty about the tithe: whether its tithing goes by what is before its gathering, or after its gathering — as with the citron, of which it is said, of a tree, “it goes by the forming of the fruit”; and there is one who says, after the ripening of the fruits. And the citron is in part like a tree and in part like the grain, which are seeds, of which it is said that its tithing is after its gathering; for it is not a tree except after the completing of its ripening.
Segment 2
And therefore they ordained the “He who brings forth” from a place where its baking is well done — to exclude burnt bread; only from a place that is well flavoured. And so the grain: after its gathering, it is like the ripening of fruits.
Segment 3
And Israel are likened to the tree and to the grain, of whom it is said: “The choicest firstfruits of your land you shall bring into the house of the Lord your God” (Ex. 23, 19). And so: “The first of the fleece of your sheep you shall give him” (Deut. 18, 4) — these are Israel, of whom it is said: “And you My sheep” (Ezek. 35). And so Israel: “Israel is holiness to the Lord, the beginning of His increase” (Jer. 2, 3) — after its gathering out of exile, its tithing. And they are called holiness to the Lord.
