Segment 1
R. Simeon said to him: With all this, you are not able to look upon the people of the world to come with the eyes, nor upon the angels, still less upon the Holy One, blessed be He, and upon His Shekinah. But with the eye of the intellect of your heart you look upon all — upon the people of the world to come, and upon the angels, and upon the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shekinah, who encircle you. And therefore Solomon, of whom it is written, “and he was wiser than all men” (I Kings 5, 11), said: “and my heart has seen much wisdom and knowledge” (Eccl. 1, 16).
Segment 2
But in prophecy you have no permission to look upon Him — still less a prophet, with the eye of the intellect — but only with the eyes, which are vision and the sight of the eyes. This is as it is written, “In a vision do I make Myself known to him” (Num. 12, 6). And further, “in a sight of the night”: vision by day, sight by night — and all with the eyes, and not with the eye of the intellect of the heart. And the eyes are the two agents of the heart and its servants, and it is king among them. And therefore a sage is superior to a prophet. And so it is with the two ears: the two servants of the heart.
Segment 3
And therefore the Rabbis have explained: the heart sees, and the heart hears. And not only that, but it is said of the heart: the heart understands, the heart knows — “and in the heart of all that are wise-hearted I have put wisdom” (Ex. 31, 6). Here, then, are wisdom and understanding and knowledge in the heart, by which heaven and earth and the deeps were made, and by which the Tabernacle was made. This is as it is written, “and I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge” (Ex. 31, 3). Whereas the eyes have nothing of all this.
