Section 10 of 30 in Mishpatim — 12 segments

Segment 1

The Holy Lamp said to him: “The oath of the Lord” — it is the Shekinah, the only daughter. And it was not for nothing that they ordained three men to release him from it. Rather: the Shin of Sabbath, the three branches of the patriarchs, the only daughter, the oath, who is joined with them.

Segment 2

Indeed, an oath takes hold only upon a thing that has substance, whereas a vow takes hold even upon a thing that has no substance; and this has been explained in the Mishnah. And more than that, they said further: vows rise above oaths, and whoever swears is as though he swore by the King Himself, and whoever vows is as though he vowed by the life of the King.

Segment 3

The Faithful Shepherd said to them: Masters of the Academy, I know of you that you know. But He who each day continually renews the work of creation will renew new things for them. For Koheleth indeed said: “There is nothing new under the sun” (Eccl. 1, 9) — but above the sun there is. And in the secrets of the Torah I wish to say: “A sun and a shield is the Lord God of hosts” (Ps. 84, 9) — in His own world, and not in the world of a common man. Even though “God has made the one over against the other” (Eccl. 7, 14), out of the darkness light comes forth.
