Segment 1א׳

רִבִּי חִיָּיא אָמַר, פַּרְעֹה בָּעָא לְנַסָּאָה לֵיהּ לְיוֹסֵף, וְאַחְלַף לֵיהּ חֶלְמָא. וְיוֹסֵף בְּגִין דְּהֲוָה יָדַע דַּרְגִּין, אִסְתַּכַּל בְּכָל מִלָּה וּמִלָּה. וְאָמַר, כָּךְ חֲמִיתָא, כָּל מִלָּה וּמִלָּה כְּדְקָא חָזֵי.

R. Hiya said: ‘Pharaoh wished to put Joseph to the test, and so changed the tenour of his dreams. But Joseph, knowing, as he did, the grades, saw clearly each object of the dream, and said, “thus and thus didst thou see”, point by point.

Segment 2ב׳

הֲדָא הוּא דִּכְתִיב וַיֹּאמֶר פַּרְעֹה אֶל יוֹסֵף אַחֲרֵי הוֹדִיעַ אֱלֹהִים אוֹתְךָ אֶת כָּל זֹאת אֵין נָבוֹן וְחָכָם כָּמוֹךָ. אַחֲרֵי הוֹדִיעַ אֱלֹהִים, אַחֲרַי הֲוֵית בְּהַהִיא שַׁעְתָּא דַּחֲלָמִית חֶלְמָא, תַּמָּן הֲוֵית שְׁכִיחַ. וּבְגִין כָּךְ אָמַר (ס"א אמת את כל זאת ידעת, ואיך ידעת פשריה) אֶת כָּל זֹאת יָדַעְתְּ חֶלְמָא הֵיךְ הֲוָה, וְיָדַעְתְּ פִּשְׁרֵיהּ.

Hence it is written: AND PHARAOH SAID UNTO JOSEPH: FORASMUCH AS GOD HATH SHOWN THEE ALL THIS, THERE IS NONE SO DISCREET AND WISE AS THOU. As if to say: You seem to have been there at the time I dreamt my dream and to have seen the dream together with its interpretation.”

Segment 3ג׳

אָמַר רִבִּי יִצְחָק, אִי הָכִי יוֹסֵף אָמַר כֹּלָּא, חֶלְמָא וּפִשְׁרָא. כְּדָנִיֵּאל דְּאָמַר חֶלְמָא וּפִשְׁרֵיהּ. אָמַר לֵיהּ, לָאו הַאי כְּהַאי (ז"ח ל"ג דהא). יוֹסֵף אִסְתַּכַּל מִגּוֹ מִלּוּלָא דְפַרְעֹה דְּהֲוָה אָמַר בְּדַרְגִּין יְדִיעָן, וְחָמָא לֵיהּ דְּקָא טָעָה, וְאָמַר לֵיהּ לָאו הָכִי, אֶלָּא הָכִי הוּא. בְּגִין דְּדַרְגִּין כְּסִדְרָן אַתְיָין. אֲבָל דָּנִיֵּאל לָא אִסְתַּכַּל מִגּוֹ מִלּוּלָא דִּנְבוּכַדְנְצַּר כְּלוּם. (דלא) וְכֹלָּא קָאֲמַר לֵיהּ חֶלְמָא וּפִשְׁרֵיהּ.

Said R. Isaac: ‘If that be so, it would signify that Joseph told Pharaoh both his dream and its interpretation, as did Daniel to Nebuchadnezzar.’ Said R. Hiya: ‘Not so. Joseph gathered from Pharaoh’s statement that he was speaking of certain grades, and was able to put him right on certain points, knowing the correct order of the grades. Whereas Daniel gathered nothing from Nebuchadnezzar’s statement and told him outright both his dream and its interpretation.
