Segment 1א׳

רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר פָּתַח, (קהלת ט׳:י״ב) וְכַצִּפֳּרִים הָאֲחוּזּוֹת בַּפָּח כָּהֵם יוּקָשִׁים בְּנֵי הָאָדָם. הַאי קְרָא הָא אִתְּמַר. אֲבָל תָּא חֲזֵי, בְּנֵי נָשָׁא לָא יַדְעִין, וְלָא שַׁמְעִין, וְלָא מִסְתַּכְּלֵי בִּרְעוּתָא דְּמָארֵיהוֹן, וְכָרוֹזָא כָּל יוֹמָא קָארֵי קָמַיְיהוּ, וְלֵית מַאן דְּצָיִית לֵיהּ, וְלֵית מַאן דְּיִתְּעַר רוּחֵיהּ לְפוּלְחָנָא דְּמָארֵיהּ.

R. Eleazar opened: “And as the birds that are caught in the snare, so are the sons of men snared” (Eccl. 9, 12). This verse has been stated. But observe: people do not know, and do not hear, and do not look into the will of their Master; and a herald calls before them every day, and there is none who listens to him, and there is none who rouses his spirit to serve his Master.

Segment 2ב׳

בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּרָמַשׁ לֵילְיָא, וְתַרְעִין סְתִימִין, אִתְּעַר נוּקְבָּא דִּתְהוֹמָא רַבָּא, וְכַמָּה חֲבִילֵי טְרִיקִין מִשְׁתַּכְּחֵי בְּעָלְמָא. כְּדֵין אָפִּיל קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא שֵׁינָתָא עַל כָּל בְּנֵי עָלְמָא, וַאֲפִילּוּ עַל כָּל דִּי בְּהוֹן אִתְּעָרוּתָא דְּחַיֵּי, וְאִינּוּן שָׁאטָן בְּעָלְמָא, וּמוֹדְעִין לְהוּ לִבְנֵי נָשָׁא, מִלִּין, מִנְּהוֹן כְּדִיבָן, וּמִנְּהוֹן קְשׁוֹט, וּבְנֵי נָשָׁא אִתְקְטָרוּ בְּשֵׁינָתָא.

When night falls and the gates are shut, the great abyss is roused, and many bands of demons are found in the world. Then the Holy One, blessed be He, casts sleep upon all the people of the world, and even upon all who possess a rousing of life; and they roam about the world and make things known to people — some of them false and some of them true — and people are held fast in sleep.

Segment 3ג׳

כַּד אִתְּעַר רוּחָא דְּצָפוֹן, וְאִתְפְּלִיג לֵילְיָא, שַׁלְהוֹבָא נָפְקָא וּבָטַשׁ תְּחוֹת גַּדְפּוֹי דְּתַרְנְגוֹלָא, וְקָרֵי, וְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא עָאל בְּגִנְתָּא דְּעֵדֶן לְאִשְׁתַּעְשְׁעָא עִם צַדִּיקַיָּא. וּכְדֵין כָּרוֹזָא נָפִיק וְקָרֵי, וְכָל בְּנֵי עָלְמָא מִתְעָרֵי בְּעַרְסַיְיהוּ, אִינּוּן דִּי בְּהוֹן אִתְּעָרוּתָא דְּחַיֵּי, קַיְימִין לְפוּלְחָנָא דְּמָארֵיהוֹן, וְעַסְקֵי בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא וּבִשְׁבָחָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא עַד דְּאָתֵי צַפְרָא.

When the north wind is roused and the night divides, a flame goes forth and strikes beneath the wings of the cock, and it crows; and the Holy One, blessed be He, enters the Garden of Eden to disport Himself with the righteous. And then a herald goes forth and calls, and all the people of the world are roused in their beds: those in whom there is a rousing of life rise for the service of their Master, and they occupy themselves with the Torah and with the praise of the Holy One, blessed be He, until morning comes.
