Segment 1א׳

(ותאנא מאי קא חמא קרא דלא אקרי אברהם עד השתא). (נ"א תא חזי, קודשא בריך הוא לא קרא לאברהם אברהם עד השתא מאי טעמא. אלא הכי אוקימנא דעד השתא לא אתגזר, וכד אתגזר אתחבר ביה האי ה"א ושריא ביה), אֶלָּא הָכִי אוֹקִימְנָא דְּעַד הַשְׁתָּא לָא אִתְגְּזַר, וְכַד אִתְגְּזַר אִתְחַבַּר בְּהַאי ה' וּשְׁכִינְתָּא שַׁרְיָא בֵּיהּ וּכְדֵין אִקְרֵי אַבְרָהָם.

We have further learnt: “The reason why the name Abraham occurs for the first time in connection with the circumcision is that when he was circumcised he became associated with the letter He, and the Shekinah rested on him.”

Segment 2ב׳

וְהַיְנוּ דִּכְתִיב, (בראשית ב׳:ד׳) אֵלֶּה תּוֹלְדוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ בְּהִבָּרְאָם. וְתָאנָא בְּה' בְּרָאָם. וְתָאנָא בְּאַבְרָהָם. מַאי קָאַמְרֵי אֶלָּא דָּא חֶסֶד וְדָא שְׁכִינְתָּא וְכֹלָּא נָחִית כְּחֲדָא, וְלָא קַשְׁיָא מִלָּה וְהַאי וְהַאי הֲוֵי.

And this is what is written, “These are the generations of the heaven and of the earth when they were created” (Gen. 2, 4). And we have learnt: behibare’am — with He He created them. And we have learnt: with Abraham. What do they mean? Rather, this is chesed (lovingkindness) and that is the Shekinah, and all descends as one; and the matter is no difficulty — it is both this and that.

אָמַר רַבִּי יַעֲקֹב לְרַבִּי אַבָּא הַאי ה' דְּהִבָּרְאָם זְעִירָא, וְה' (דברים ל"ב ו) דְּהַלַּיְיָ רַבְרְבָא, מַה בֵּין הַאי לְהַאי, אָמַר לֵיהּ דָּא (שכינתא) שְׁמִיטָה, וְדָא יוֹבְלָא (ואית דמתני דכלא חד, דכד מנהרא מצדיק כדין קיימא באשלמותא וה' רברבא, דהא מתנהרא כדקא יאות, ולזמנין דלא קיימא באשלמותא וינקא מסטרא אחרא כדין ה"א זעירא) וּבְגִין כָּךְ זִמְנִין דְּסִיהֲרָא קָיְימָא בְּאַשְׁלָמוּתָא וְזִמְנִין בִּפְגִימוּתָא, וּבְאַנְפָּהָא אִשְׁתְּכַח וְאִשְׁתְּמוֹדַע וְכֹלָּא שַׁפִּיר. וְהַאי אִיהוּ בְּרִירָא דְּמִלָּה.

R. Jacob said to R. Abba: This He of “when they were created” is small, and the He of “Do you thus requite the Lord” (Deut. 32, 6) is large. What is the difference between the one and the other? He said to him: This is the Sabbatical year and that is the Jubilee. And therefore at times the moon stands in fulness and at times in defect; and in her face it is found and made known, and all is well. And this is the clear sense of the matter.
