Section 22 of 30 in Ki Teitzei — 4 segments

Segment 1

And not for nothing did the Holy One, blessed be He, say: Whoever occupies himself with the Torah and with acts of lovingkindness and prays with the congregation, I account it to him as though he had redeemed Me and My children from among the worshippers of stars and constellations. And how many are the sons of men who labour in the Torah, and do acts of lovingkindness, and pray, and yet the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shekinah and Israel are not redeemed. But he is to labour in the Torah so as to join her to the Holy One, blessed be He. And as for acts of lovingkindness, they have already explained it: there is no pious man save one who deals kindly with his Maker, for all the commandments that he performs are to redeem His Shekinah by them, and in this he does kindness with the Holy One, blessed be He.

Segment 2

One who deals kindly with His Shekinah deals kindly with the Holy One, blessed be He. For when Israel sinned, and the Holy One, blessed be He, sought to chastise them, the Mother was brooding over them, until they went out to evil ways. What did the Holy One, blessed be He, do? He drove out the King’s sons and the Matrona; and He swore that He would not return to His place until the Matrona is returned to hers. And one who returns in repentance, and deals kindly with the Shekinah, and with the whole Torah and with her commandments, and it is (a variant reads: and he is) only to redeem the Shekinah — he does kindness with his Maker, and it is as though he had redeemed Him, and His Shekinah, and His children.

Segment 3

Elijah and all the heads of the Academies said: Faithful Shepherd, you are that man; you are the son of the King and the Matrona. Your labour towards the Holy One, blessed be He, is not as one who does kindness with his Maker, but as a son who is bound to give himself and his strength to redeem the father and the mother, and who gave himself over to death for them. For one who is not a son of the King, and does good to the King and to the Matrona — assuredly this is reckoned as one who does kindness with his Maker.
