Segment 1

“If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no son,” etc., “her husband’s brother shall go in to her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her” (Deut. 25, 5). This precept is to perform the levirate duty with a brother’s wife. For a brother’s wife is Daleth, and with ach, a brother, she is echad, one. And if, God forbid, his heart is not set to bring the brother upon the Daleth, who is his wife, the mate of ach, he makes a separation, and Samael, another god, enters into the midst; and of him it is said, “and he spilled it on the ground, that he should not,” etc. (Gen. 38, 9), for the point of the letter Daleth is taken away from echad. And therefore, “and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother.” And the spilling of seed withholds from him many blessings, and separates the unification. And therefore, “And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord slew him.”

Segment 2

And the unification of ach with Daleth is in the Righteous One. And Boaz, because he prevailed over his inclination, is called righteous; and this is Boaz — bo oz, in him is strength — strong in his inclination. “Lo, all these things does God work, twice, yea thrice, with a man” (Job 33, 29); and this is Yod-He-Vau, three letters (a variant reads: the patriarchs) that are comprised in the Righteous One, to perform the levirate duty with He.

Segment 3

And binah is the son of Yah. On her account it is said, “Now this was the custom in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning exchanging, to confirm all things” (Ruth 4, 7). Here he hints at the change of the Name, and this is Mazpaz: here, “now this was in former time in Israel.” And this is the change of place: Ehyeh — where is the place of His glory, to revere Him? Yod-He-Vau, it is Ehyeh; and this is the change of place. The change of deed: Adonai — the Aleph is Ehyeh, the Yod is the Tetragrammaton; both of them are changed in Adonai.
