Segment 1
And you have a baraita that supports you more than them all, because you are Leviathan (the bar serpent) of the sea of the Torah. The master of all the fishes is called Leviathan, after the Torah, of which it is said, “For they shall be a chaplet of grace to your head” (Prov. 1, 9). And of you, “man and beast You save, O Lord” (Ps. 36, 7). “Man” — of whom it is said, “When a man dies in a tent” (Num. 19, 14), and the Masters of the Mishnah have explained: the Torah endures only in one who puts himself to death over it; and there is no death but poverty. “And beast” — these are the ignorant, who are subdued like the horse and the mule beneath the Masters of the Mishnah.
Segment 2
Meanwhile the Holy Lamp came. The Faithful Shepherd opened and said: Masters of the Mishnah, who is Leviathan? The Holy Lamp said to him: This is he whose grade is the Central Pillar, and the Righteous One, of whom it is said: the body and the covenant we reckon as one. And he was reared in this sea, which is the supernal Mother, the sea in which they unify the Holy One, blessed be He, with twenty-five and twenty-five letters, which in number are yam, the sea; and he is within her. The Faithful Shepherd said: Assuredly, Leviathan, who stands upon the shore of the sea, and the world stands upon his fins — this is “the righteous is the foundation of the world” (Prov. 10, 25), upon whom the whole world stands. The Holy Lamp said: Happy is your portion, Faithful Shepherd. (…).
