Section 5 of 21 in Kedoshim — 5 segments

Segment 1

And with all this, Masters of the Academy: not all glory is equal, for “a son honours his father, and a servant his master” (Mal. 1, 6). A son honours on condition of receiving no wage; yet he is commanded concerning the glory of Father and Mother. And if he does not wish to do His command, Father and Mother beat him until he does it against his will. And if he is a grown son, the court compels him. For if he does not wish to do it, what is written of him? “This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he does not hearken to our voice” (Deut. 21, 20); and they judge him with stoning. But a servant who serves on condition of receiving a reward — if he does not do his master’s command, his master removes him from his house and takes another. What he could not do to his son: rather, either he does his command, or he puts him to death.

Segment 2

The Holy Lamp said to him: what causes him not to do His command, seeing that he is His son? The Faithful Shepherd said: assuredly, the admixture of evil. And this mystery caused Israel to sin against their Father in heaven. And this is the mystery of “but mingled themselves with the nations” (Ps. 106, 35). And this caused the slaughter of Israel, and laid the Temple waste. And therefore no proselytes are received in the days of the Messiah, but “The Lord alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him” (Deut. 32, 12).

Segment 3

For Israel are from the tree of life. A good servant and a bad servant: from the side of Metatron, a good servant, a servant faithful to his master; the bad servant is Samael. One who is from the tree of life is a son of the world to come, a son from the side of the son of Yod-He, which is binah (understanding). And he inherits malchut, which is the letter He. And how does he inherit her? If he does the command of Father and Mother; because she is malchut, the commandment of the King, and of him it is said, “Why do you transgress the king’s commandment?” (Esth. 3, 3). She is the commandment, and the commands of the King are upon the positive and upon the negative.
