Section 34 of 43 in Idra Zuta — 10 segments
Segment 1
Two ears, to hear good and evil. And both of them rise to one, as it is written, “Incline Your ear, O Lord, and hear” (II Kings 19, 16). The ear, within its inside, hangs in crooked markings, so that the voice may be held back from entering the brain, and the brain may discern it, and not in haste; for every matter that is in haste is not in perfect wisdom.
Segment 2
From these ears hang all the winged creatures, who take up the voice from the world; and all of them are likewise called the ears of the Lord, of whom it is written, “for a bird of the air shall carry the voice,” etc. (Eccl. 10, 20). “For a bird of the air shall carry the voice” — this verse is difficult. Now what voice is there here? For the beginning of the verse is written, “Curse not the king, no, not in your thought” — “in your thought” is written — “and in your bedchamber,” etc. What is the reason, “for a bird of the air shall carry the voice”, when there is no voice here?
Segment 3
But certainly, all that a man thinks, and all that he contemplates in his heart, effects nothing until he brings it forth with his lips, and he (a variant reads: even though he) pays no heed to it. And that word which he brings forth cleaves the air, and goes and rises and flies about in the world, and a voice is made of it. And that voice the winged creatures take up, and they bring it up to the King, and it enters His ears. This is what is written, “And the Lord heard the voice of your words” (Deut. 5, 25); “and when the Lord heard it, His anger was kindled” (Num. 11, 1).
