The fifth adornment. The hair ceases, and two apples are seen, on this side and on that, red as this red rose, and they flame into two hundred and seventy worlds. These two apples, when they shine (a variant adds: from two sides) from the light of the two holy supernal apples of the Ancient One — the red is drawn off, and the whiteness comes. Of this it is written, “The Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you” (Num. 6, 25): for when they shine, the world is blessed. And at the hour when they become red, it is written, “The Lord lift up His countenance upon you” — that is to say, He will withdraw, and no anger will be found in the world. It has been taught: all the lights that shine from the Holy Ancient One are called “the former chasadim”, and because of them all those everlasting chasadim shine.
