Zohar, Ha'Azinu 3
Section 3 of 17 in Ha'Azinu — 4 segments
Segment 1
R. Isaac discoursed on the verse: “As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons” (S.S. 2, 3). ‘Just as the apple is superior in its colouring to all other fruits, so the Holy One, blessed be He, is distinguished from all forces, higher and lower.
Segment 2
Observe that the Holy One, blessed be He, is compared to the apple, which has three colours, and the Community of Israel to the lily, which has two, red and white.
Segment 3
The Holy One, blessed be He, is like the apple, and the Community of Israel like the lily. For so the Community of Israel said, “Under the apple tree I awakened you” (S.S. 8, 5). This “under the apple tree” — in what place is it? It is those patriarchs of whom we have spoken.’ R. Jose said: ‘It is the Jubilee.’ R. Abba said: ‘All this is well, but it is those patriarchs we have mentioned: they are the three colours that are joined in the apple.’
