Section 11 of 17 in Ha'Azinu — 9 segments

Segment 1

DO YOU THUS REQUITE THE LORD: this is the Shekinah. And we have explained these words, for as we have learnt, the He of be-hibaram (Gen. 2) is small, and the He in “Do you thus requite the Lord” is large. And it has been stated, for it has been taught: R. Judah said: ‘The He in every place is the Holy One, blessed be He, and is called Mother. And there are two worlds, as it is written, “from world to world” (Ps. 106, 48). And we have learnt the mystery of the verse, “with beaten oil, a fourth part of a hin” (Num. 28, 5).’

Segment 2

It has been taught, R. Judah says: ‘In many places I have observed that the Holy One, blessed be He, does not remove His love from Israel; for in every place where they are, the Holy One, blessed be He, is among them, as it is written, “I will not reject them, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break My covenant with them” (Lev. 26, 44). Note the words “with them”: among them, with them; He never removes Himself from them.’

Segment 3

As R. Isaac was once journeying on the road, R. Hiya met him. He said to him: ‘I see from the look of your face that your abode is with the Shekinah. Why is it written, “And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians”? Surely it should be, “And I shall come down”? It means, however, “I went down at first”, namely, when Jacob went down to Egypt; I then went down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians, since otherwise they could not have endured the captivity; and so it says, “I am with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him” (Ps. 91, 15).’
