AND HE SHALL TAKE A WIFE IN HER VIRGINITY (Lev. 21, 13). R. Simeon opened: “and, lo, he has laid wanton charges,” etc. (Deut. 22, 17); and it is written, “and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver,” etc., “because he has brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel.” But is she a virgin of Israel? She is her father's virgin, or her husband's virgin. What then is “a virgin of Israel” here? This is what is written, “Ask your father, and he will declare to you, your elders, and they will tell you” (Deut. 32, 7). So here too, of the priest who stands after the pattern of what is above it is written, “and he shall take a wife in her virginity”; so too “in her virginity”, that she should not go out from the gate of her court beyond her appointed time; and this has been taught.
