Segment 1
AND ON THE FIFTEENTH DAY (Lev. 23, 6). R. Judah opened: “And the Canaanite, the king of Arad, heard” (Num. 21, 1). As we have learnt, three supernal gifts were made ready for Israel through three brothers: Moses, Aaron and Miriam. The manna, for the merit of Moses; the clouds of glory, for the merit of Aaron; the well, for the merit of Miriam. And all of them are held above. The manna, for the merit of Moses, as it is written, “Behold, I will cause to rain bread from heaven for you” (Ex. 16, 4) — “from heaven” precisely: this is Moses. The clouds of glory, for the merit of Aaron, as it is written, “that You, Lord, are seen eye to eye (Aaron),” etc. (Num. 14, 14); and it is written, “and the cloud of the incense may cover” (Lev. 16, 13). As there, seven; so here too, seven. For in the incense seven clouds are bound as one (and further). And Aaron is head over all the seven clouds, and he binds six others to himself every day.
Segment 2
When Miriam died the well was taken from them, as it is written, “And Miriam died, and there was no water for the congregation” (Num. 20, 1, 2). Another well which was with Israel also desired to depart, but when it saw six clouds that hovered over them it remained attached to them.
Segment 3
When Aaron died the clouds departed and the cloud of the well with them, until Moses came and brought them back.’
