Section 3 of 51 in Emor — 4 segments

Segment 1

R. Isaac said that the word “say” here signifies “say quietly”, just as all the operations of the priests were carried out in quietness; and the repetition “say” and “thou shalt say” is to give emphasis to the injunction that they should not defile themselves, since he who ministers in a holy place should be holy throughout. As we have said, the body without the spirit is unclean, and the desire of unclean spirits is for the bodies of Israel, since now that the holy spirit has been emptied out of them they want to be joined to a holy vessel. The priests who are additionally holy must not defile themselves at all, since “the oil of the anointment of the Lord is upon him”.’

Segment 2

And he stands below after the pattern of what is above, as it is written, “Like the goodly oil upon the head, coming down upon the beard, the beard of Aaron, that comes down upon the collar of his garments” (Ps. 133, 2). This verse has been explained; but “like the goodly oil upon the head” is the holy supernal oil of anointing, which flows and issues from the place of the river that is deepest of all. Another explanation: which flows and issues from the head of all heads, the hidden of all hidden. “Upon the head”: upon the head assuredly, the head of the primordial Adam.

Segment 3

“Coming down upon the beard”: this is the precious beard, as has been explained. “The beard of Aaron”: this is the High Priest above, and this has been explained. And that oil “comes down upon the collar of his garments”, for from those anointings it flows and issues and descends to those below; and after this pattern it flows down, and the priest below is crowned with the oil of anointing below.
